Tips To Make Dog Training Easy And Fun

Dogs have walked faithfully beside man throughout recorded history. In the modern era, when the Internet brings vast swathes of information within everyones reach, dog owners have more resources than ever to train their pets to behave according to their wishes. Here are just a few handy ideas for getting the most out of the dog-training process:

TIP! The fastest way to train your dog to sit is to utilize positive reinforcement. If you command your dog to sit and he or she sits for a decent amount of time, then you can give the dog a treat.

Training your dog doesnt have to be a chore. Make training into a game that will enrich your dogs life. Try having your dog sit each time he brings you the ball you threw. By incorporating training into playtime, youll have a fun and rewarding experience which results in a well-mannered pet!

A great way to train your dog to stop chewing items when youre away from home is to catch them in the act. When you see your dog picking up an item, ready to take a bite, slowly take the item away from them and firmly, but in a gentle way tell them "no".

TIP! When you are training your dog, you should make sure that your dog is not sick when it is not following your commands that it normally will follow. They also need regular visits to the vet so that he or she can inform you of your dogs health.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is to be sure that you introduce it to social environments early and frequently. Your dog needs to know how to act around other dogs and humans - this is not something you can teach it otherwise. This will help to reduce sporadic behavior in new environments as well.

When you are training your dog, never use a command he knows as a punishment. For example, if your dog needs a time out, do not put him in his crate. It may create a negative association for him. Another example is when you call your dog to you to be punished. This hurts his chances of completing successful recalls in the future.

TIP! When training an aggressive dog you should begin training them slowly to show them you are the alpha. If you start out too quickly with alpha behavior on your part, an aggressive dog may think your behavior is a threat, and return an aggressive response.

When training your dog, make sure that you understand his personality. If you dont, then it will be impossible for you to train him effectively. So carefully study your dog before you attempt to train it.

When giving commands to your dog, never come down to their level. Maintaining eye contact and a fully erect, dominant stance imparts control to the dog. Your dog will be receptive to commands given from this posture much easier than a crouching owner who is seen as an equal or playmate.

TIP! Start training your dog early. Many people believe that very young puppies are too young to learn.

When training your dog, you should always make sure you use the same word or action for each individual behavior. Dogs respond much better to this because dogs will associate a specific word or action with that particular type of behavior. Consistency is key. By doing this, you will have a higher rate of success with training your pet.

One of the most important part of dog training is communication. Make sure you are clear and consistent when you are working with your dog. This includes verbal and body language as well as rewards and corrections. Remember to be aware of what your dog is communicating to you as well. He will let you know if he is having a good day or if he is feeling anxious and overworked.

The dog-owner relationship is as old as history itself, and it is not going away any time soon. With all of the information available to them at a touch of a button, today dog owners can find the perfect training strategy to make their dog-training experience a successful and happy one.

It is that time of the year once again!!!!!!!!

I would like to take this time to wish all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Enjoy with your friends and family and remember to make a positive contribution to those who are less fortunate. There are just too many people out there who are destitute and they need to be helped in one way or another. Lets become a giving nation, all the old clothes that we have lying somewhere in the boxes will make a big difference if we give them to people who are in need.

On an animal note, lets not forget our pets. To them there is no festive season, they love us the same way all the time. Lets not abandon them, if you are going away please ensure that you have arranged with a shelter organisation to look after them or a neighbour or friend that you trust. Looking after animals is a challenge, especially if you are not an animal person as its not about throwing food and changing water, you need to spend time with them. You need to check their health as they can never come up to you and say, I have been poisoned or i am not feeling well. So when you decide on the people who will look after your pets have that in mind.

I am spending the holidays with my dogs as the kids are gone to have fun. I will be running around and walking them every morning and having a great time. I will also be looking after some of my neighbours animals, that is if they decide to involve me.

Make an informed decision before deciding to buy a puppy as a present for your child.

Once again, enjoy the festive season and looking forward to chatting to you in the new year.

Lets All Arrive Alive

  • Take breaks as you go on your long journeys.
  • Dont drink and drive.
  • Safety belts all the time, even those on the back seat.
  • No chatting on the cellphones while you drive.
  • Avoid road rage, drive away as you have nothing to loose.
  • Take precautions before assisting people involved in accidents.
  • No lift to strangers.

DO NOT OVER SPEND, JANUARY AND SCHOOL FEES IS AROUND THE CORNER

Obedience training and your dog

Obedience training is one of the most important and most effective things any owner can do for his or her dog. A properly obedience trained dog is a happy, productive and safe member of the family, while an untrained dog can be destructive and even dangerous.
Dogs are designed by nature to follow leaders, and to look for that leadership. As pack animals, dogs naturally follow the directions of their pack leader. In the absence of a strong leader, the dog may assume this role itself. Dogs that think of themselves as the leader of their human pack can become uncooperative, destructive and even dangerous.

Proper obedience training opens up important lines of communication between handler and dog.
The basis of any obedience training program is to gain the cooperation and respect of the animal. This respect cannot be exerted through rough handling methods or mistreatment. It must instead be earned through leadership and proper training techniques.
Basic obedience training consists of teaching the dog what to do and what not to do. When it comes to desired behaviors, it is important for the dog to learn and respond to basic commands, such as heeling when walking, stopping on command, sitting when directed, coming when called and staying where the handler directs.

The list of what not to do is also important when it comes to obedience training.

Some of the donts of obedience training include - not jumping up on people, not forging ahead when walking and, not chewing the furniture or your property, and not getting out of control when exposed to novel situations.
In essence, obedience training involves establishing the social hierarchy that is so important to dogs as pack animals.

When your dog follows your obedience commands, such as - come, stay, sit, heel, etc., he or she is showing compliance and submissiveness. This is the same type of behavior a submissive member of a wild dog pack would show to the alpha dog in that pack.
As with any type of dog training, it is important that obedience training sessions be fun and rewarding for both dog and handler.

A happy, healthy dog will be best able to learn, and keeping the dog happy during the training sessions will make life easier for both yourself and your dog. Obedience training has many benefits for the dog as well as the handler. For one thing, a well trained, obedient dog can be permitted a larger amount of freedom than an untrained dog. For instance, a dog that has been properly trained to come when called can safely enjoy some off leash play time at the local park.

There is always a debate over whether it is easier to obedience train puppies or older dogs. The fact is that both puppies and older dogs can be successfully trained to be willing, obedient companions. It is generally easier to train puppies and young dogs than it is to retrain dogs that have developed behavior problems. Even problem dogs, however, can be successfully retrained using basic obedience training and control concepts.

When obedience training puppies, however, it is important to remember that puppies generally have a shorter attention span than to do full grown dogs. It is important, therefore to keep training sessions short in the beginning. It is also important to incorporate lots of play-time with other puppies, dogs and other animals, as well as with lots of different people.

Proper socialization is very important to creating a safe, healthy and happy companion dog.
There are many obedience training classes held in all parts of the country, and new puppy and dog owners are encouraged to enroll in one of these classes. Not only do puppy kindergarten and dog obedience classes provide important structure for the dogs, but it provides important chances for proper socialization of the puppy as well.

This thread will be continued.

Labrador Retriever

As a companion, the Labrador Retriever is good-natured and gentle enough to accept the roughhousing of youngsters without returning it.
The Labrador has been Americas most popular dog for many years in succession, and has featured at the top of the list of the ten most popular breeds in America for some time.
We will go over some of the basic characteristics of the Labrador Retriever to help you get a better understanding of the Labrador Retriever as a breed and possibly a new addition to your family. The purpose of this article is to improve the public’s knowledge about dogs, the Labrador Retriever in particular.

Labrador Retrievers have an abundance of self-control and loyalty, but they do not make very good watchdogs. If you really need a good watchdog get your Labrador a German Shepherd friend.

Obedience-trained Labradors as well as other breeds are being used as Therapy Dogs to enrich the lives of residents and even emotionally disturbed children in nursing homes.

Regular nail trimming is important. Nails that are not properly clipped can crack and split, which can lead to infection.
A regular trimming, at least once a week or every two weeks, will save both you and your Labrador Retriever a lot of pain and aggravation.
Purchase a good quality nail clipper. You might also want to purchase a clotting agent, such as Kwik-Stop, or even a styptic pen. Some times nails are clipped too short and bleeding occurs.
A good tip is to use a flashlight and shine through the back of the nail to locate the quirk. (Pink part of the nail), which is the live tissue inside the nail.

The suburbs may be the best of Labrador Retriever worlds, but its environment poses its own special set of problems. " Having a Labrador Retriever under ones "direct control" is, of course, an ambiguous phrase.
Residents do not always obey leash laws. Free-roving dogs often form packs or bite, a growing problem in many suburbs and villages.
In cities stray dogs are picked up promptly and impounded. The best and most humane way is to bring the dog into the house where it belongs, and can be more easily obedience-trained.

Newfoundland

Labradors originated from the coast of Newfoundland in the 17th Century. They were both known as Newfoundland dogs and it was not until 1812 that the larger breed was known as Newfoundlands, and the smaller as the lesser Newfoundland or Labrador. There are two portions to the Province, the Island of Newfoundland is located in the Gulf of St.Lawrence and Labrador is on the Eastern part of the Canadian mainland. Separated by the Strait of Belle Isle.

The Island of Newfoundland is 111,390 square kilometers and Labrador is 294,330 square kilometers making the total area of the Province 405,720 square kilometers.

People

People seem to believe that a hunting dog can be left outside and kenneled and yet not all hunting dogs make good "kennel dogs" and the Labrador Retriever is one of those. This is a breed that is a close relative of the Newfoundland, it is a people oriented dog with a natural desire to be with people. A Labrador retriever can also be trained as service dogs to assist people with special needs such as Autism, Epilepsy or any other seizures condition, visual impairment, physical handicap and so much more.

For physically handicapped people, they can retrieve certain things or do particular tasks for them.

Labs

Retrievers were originally bred as hungting dogs. They were taught to sit by the hunter and wait until game was shot and then retrieve it on command. This meant sometimes swimming through cold water or running through dense brush. Labs were also taught not to damage the game upon returning it to their master.
Working retrievers had no use for aggression since handling birds roughly or growling at other hunters goes against their friendly nature. They will gladly hunt with anyone, or play fetch with anyone who is willing. They tend to see everyone as a friend or potential playmate.

Labradors are sound insensitive so that the loud bang of a hunters gun wont disturb them. Loud noise, such as that from children, does not tend to bother labs and yelling at them will generally not get a response.

Labs are large dogs, normally around fifty to seventyfive pounds.
Yellow labs can vary from nearly white to fox red, but the other two colors are pretty much all the same.

I am not the author of this article.
Unfortunately the authors name got lost and I apologize.
However, I have included this article to better understand the Labrador.

Selecting a puppy

The easiest way to select the right pup is to ask the breeder to choose one that is not shy, overly dominant or stubborn. However, if the breeder prefers you do the picking, try to take an experienced person with you to view the pups.
If all fails, th following tips should help.

  • Watching a group of pups at play will help you choose th one you want. So, if you do not get the opportunity to view several pups, try to arrange to the whole litter together. Then you will be able to see temperament differences in action. If, for example, you wish to avoid owning a pack-leader type, you can look out for the classroom-bully-type pup that dominates and picks on the other pups. Once you have distinguished this type of pup, you will know that it will not be going home you!
  • Likewise, avoid the pup that runs and hides when the bully appears. A pup that barks at you or the other pups should also be avoided at all costs. You do not want a pup that is overly vocal: if one of the litter is barking at this early stage, it is going to be a nuisance barker. Good watchdogs do not usually start barking until they are between seven and 12 months.

Now you have decided on the breed type, CONGRATULATIONS.

The ideal age to acquire your new puppy once you have made the decision about your breed type is between 6 to 8 weeks of age. At this age the puppy will be newly weaned from its mother and dependent on its new owner. This is the ideal time to establish a strong bond between owner and pup.

Also insist tht the pup be purchased conditional upon your veterinarian examining it and giving it a clean bill of health.
