Introducing Volcano

2011, the year that was.

Its a new year and I am looking forward to a beautiful year with new targets to be achieved. Too many things happened in the past year and I just want to forget and look forward to 2012.

Fellow bloggers I am back doing what I like the most and that is educating people and sharing information on the welfare of our dogs.

I have a new puppy that I am busy training at the moment, her name is Volcano, I have no idea as to why the name but it was given by my son, Lwazi as he is the one who names all my dogs. She is an intelligent puppy full of life and has all the energy and is always willing to learn. She is three months old.

I have started her on the basic training and is mastering fetch than all other commands. But it wont be long before she is up to speed with other basic commands.

I intend enrolling her at the South African Dog Training College as soon as all her innoculations are done. No trial by error here, I want her to be trained where I learned all that I know today as far as Dog training is concerned.

Hope you will enjoy following Volcanos training until she becomes the next Champion

The Best Advice for Training Your New Puppy

Author: Jimmy Cox

Raising a puppy is a comparatively simple project, providing you make liberal use of patience and common sense. The young puppy cannot be expected to act like a grown dog; he needs direction and supervision. But the pup will quickly grow up and the period of close daily supervision becomes correspondingly shorter as the puppy matures. Naturally, raising a young puppy will cause some changes in your life and home. Whether these changes are pleasant or unpleasant depends largely on you and the regime you set for the puppy.

Setting The Stage For The New Puppy

If theres anything that will get the family and puppy off to a bad start, its bringing the pup home without any preparation. Resist the temptation to surprise the family with a new puppy. No doubt your family will quickly recover from the excitement stirred up by the sudden appearance of a captivating pup, but what about the puppy? It can be a trying time for him.

Sleeping arrangements

Decide whether the pup is going to sleep indoors or outdoors. Make this decision before you bring him home. The type and location of his bed are important. His bed or doghouse should be his own, a place where he can curl up and nap, away from the clatter of family life. And once he takes over bed or doghouse, respect his right to privacy.

Indoors

The puppys bed can be an ordinary cardboard box with a mattress of cedar shavings, shredded newspaper or a washable blanket. Or it can be one of the more elaborate commercial beds. If you use a cardboard box, cut down about one-half of one side, so the pup can climb in and out. Whatever the type of bed you buy or make, it should be so constructed that it is easily cleaned.

Once youve located the bed, avoid shifting it around after the pup has taken over. Moving the bed from spot to spot and room to room will only serve to confuse the puppy. He may well give it up altogether and find himself another nook.

Outdoors

If you provide the puppy with a dry and snug doghouse, he will manage very well outdoors all year round. Most dogs do, except the toy and miniature breeds. Nature will help the dog that lives outdoors by giving him a heavier coat.

Have the doghouse set up before the puppy arrives. If you dont have it ready, youll find yourself coping with two sleeping arrangements: one, his sleeping in the house until you can get a doghouse; and two, again when you put him outdoors. And once he gets accustomed to sleeping in the house, hell not want to go outdoors. Eliminate this double work by having the doghouse on hand.

Locate the doghouse where it will be protected from the hot summer sun and the winter winds. If a southern exposure is not practical, you can reduce wind-draft by erecting a canvas or burlap shield around the doghouse area. In summer, an awning will provide shade if no trees are nearby.

Equipment and accessories

A lot of running around and using makeshift equipment can be avoided if you have the necessary equipment and accessories before you bring the puppy home. Your pups "layette" should include a feeding dish, water pan, brush, comb, collar, leash, and some indestructible toys.

Stainless-steel or aluminum food and water pans are best. Enamelware splits and cracks. The food dish should not be too large, otherwise the pup will step into it. Later on, you can get him a larger pan. If you are getting a long-eared dog, you would be wise to buy one of the special food dishes for these breeds.

Now you are ready to bring your pup home!

Stop breeding for the sake of breeding breed to improve something on that dog you want to breed

There is a craze going on about dog breeding and it makes me sick to the bone. People have a wrong perception that there is a lot of money to be made in dog breeding. As a result they mate anything with a tail. This so wrong as it is very expensive to raise puppies that you will eventually struggle to sell.
Not sure what one can do to ensure that people get to understand this concept. Breed only to improve the breed, invest on a good female and pay a stud fee for a champion dog to breed from. Dont just breed from any dog with a tail.
On the picture I am standing next to Pavarotti a Champion dog that died some few years back and no one has bred anything close to that dog, but there are many dog breeders who breed on daily basis.
Thats my take.

Achieving Dog Training Success With The 18 Donts Rules

A well-train dog usually leads a happier and healthier life and its owner also can enjoy a trouble-free life long companion. Dog training - basic obedience, house and potty training are therefore essential and important to a dog’s education.

The conventional method of dog training tips and guide would be to list a series of things that you should “Do” and you might even know the A-Z of dog training! But sometimes what should be done can be said best by telling what should not be done. Hope you agree with me!

This article seeks to list 18 “Don’t” when you train your dog. The reasons for the donts will become evident as the lessons continue and each one is based upon the distinctive psychology of the dogs mind.

1. DONT punish your dog while you are angry or lack control of yourself.

2. DONT punish your dog with the lead or any instrument of training or anything he should associate with duty or pleasure.

3. DONT sneak up on your dog or grab him from the rear.

4. DONT chase your dog to catch him; he must come to you or run after you.

5. DONT coax your dog to you and then turn upon him with the whip. You will regret the deception.

6. DONT trick or fool or taunt your dog. It is cruel and inconsistent to tease your dog to come to you when he can not.

7. DONT punish a dog by stepping on his paws needlessly. They are exceedingly sensitive. Dont twist his ears playfully or otherwise. Never strike him on the backbone, in the face or on the ears.

8. DONT grab your dog or reach for him quickly. He should never fear his master, should not be made nervous by his master, and should feel that punishment given is deserved.

9. DONT nag your dog; dont be giving orders to him constantly; dont pester him with your shoutings.

10. DONT praise a dog for doing a certain act, then at a later time, scold him for doing the same act. If you permit him to bite your toes today and think it fun, do not strike him for doing it tomorrow, when you are not in good humor. Consistency is a chief virtue in dog training.

11. DONT train your dog immediately or soon after he has eaten.

12. DONT lose patience with a puppy younger than six months. Never throw or kick a puppy nor lift him by the head or leg or skin of the neck.

13. DONT train him in feats requiring much strength or endurance until he is at least six months old.

14. DONT work your dog without some short rest or play periods during training. A five-minute rest for every fifteen minutes of training is desirable.

15. DONT permit everyone to give commands to your dog. While you are training him, he must be a one-man dog, depending on you alone to feed him and care for him.

16. DONT consider tricks the chief end or the chief part of training. Usefulness is the object sought in all instruction of the dog. Acts that spring naturally from the dogs instincts are to be fostered.

17. DONT expect your dog to be a wonderful dog after a few weeks of training; four months to a year may be necessary in order to make the master proud of him, but the work is worth the effort. Training never ends.

18. DONT jump to the conclusion that your dog is dumb. He may differ with you believing that the trainer should know more than the dog.

To end, try to remember these 18 Don’ts rules, enjoy training your dog and most importantly have lots of fun along the way!

It is that time of the year once again!!!!!!!!

I would like to take this time to wish all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Enjoy with your friends and family and remember to make a positive contribution to those who are less fortunate. There are just too many people out there who are destitute and they need to be helped in one way or another. Lets become a giving nation, all the old clothes that we have lying somewhere in the boxes will make a big difference if we give them to people who are in need.

On an animal note, lets not forget our pets. To them there is no festive season, they love us the same way all the time. Lets not abandon them, if you are going away please ensure that you have arranged with a shelter organisation to look after them or a neighbour or friend that you trust. Looking after animals is a challenge, especially if you are not an animal person as its not about throwing food and changing water, you need to spend time with them. You need to check their health as they can never come up to you and say, I have been poisoned or i am not feeling well. So when you decide on the people who will look after your pets have that in mind.

I am spending the holidays with my dogs as the kids are gone to have fun. I will be running around and walking them every morning and having a great time. I will also be looking after some of my neighbours animals, that is if they decide to involve me.

Make an informed decision before deciding to buy a puppy as a present for your child.

Once again, enjoy the festive season and looking forward to chatting to you in the new year.

Lets All Arrive Alive

  • Take breaks as you go on your long journeys.
  • Dont drink and drive.
  • Safety belts all the time, even those on the back seat.
  • No chatting on the cellphones while you drive.
  • Avoid road rage, drive away as you have nothing to loose.
  • Take precautions before assisting people involved in accidents.
  • No lift to strangers.

DO NOT OVER SPEND, JANUARY AND SCHOOL FEES IS AROUND THE CORNER

Selecting a puppy

The easiest way to select the right pup is to ask the breeder to choose one that is not shy, overly dominant or stubborn. However, if the breeder prefers you do the picking, try to take an experienced person with you to view the pups.
If all fails, th following tips should help.

  • Watching a group of pups at play will help you choose th one you want. So, if you do not get the opportunity to view several pups, try to arrange to the whole litter together. Then you will be able to see temperament differences in action. If, for example, you wish to avoid owning a pack-leader type, you can look out for the classroom-bully-type pup that dominates and picks on the other pups. Once you have distinguished this type of pup, you will know that it will not be going home you!
  • Likewise, avoid the pup that runs and hides when the bully appears. A pup that barks at you or the other pups should also be avoided at all costs. You do not want a pup that is overly vocal: if one of the litter is barking at this early stage, it is going to be a nuisance barker. Good watchdogs do not usually start barking until they are between seven and 12 months.

Now you have decided on the breed type, CONGRATULATIONS.

The ideal age to acquire your new puppy once you have made the decision about your breed type is between 6 to 8 weeks of age. At this age the puppy will be newly weaned from its mother and dependent on its new owner. This is the ideal time to establish a strong bond between owner and pup.

Also insist tht the pup be purchased conditional upon your veterinarian examining it and giving it a clean bill of health.

How To Get The Best Results When Training Your Dog

Virtually every negative dog behavior, including barking, growling, and aggression, can be prevented or counteracted with proper training. This article will help you to stop excessive barking, unwarranted growling and overall rowdiness. A dog can be turned into the ideal pet with the right training.

Dont give your dog too many treats as rewards, or he might start adding too many pounds. When trying to feed their dogs a healthy diet, many people do not count the calories in the treats. These can add up fast.

Training is a great way to help your dog with separation anxiety. Separation anxiety can cause a dog to bark or destroy things while youre away from home. Proper training can teach your dog appropriate ways to entertain himself while you are not home. While youre training your dog, its important to also show a great amount of love so your dog knows that everything is alright.

Your dog can, and should, find the training experience to be a positive one. Only train your dog in ten to fifteen minute sessions. A dog has a limited attention span so any longer will cause him or her to become bored. The rewards offered to your dog need to be plentiful (especially at first) and varied. Praise your dog often when he does well and show a lot of love. If you make training fun, he will enjoy listening, too.

If your dog possesses specific triggers associated to bad behavior, try to keep him busy while the temptation passes. Keep your dog busy if you come across other dogs while on a walk. This builds a relationship where he takes his behavior cues from you and your responses.

Do not tie up your dogs too closely. If there chains become entangled with one another it could lead to an injury. It can even be fatal if you tie a large dog up with a small dog, and the large dog ends up getting a chain wrapped around the small dogs neck.

Training should be about rewards and discipline with dogs not punishments. You should make every effort to prevent the behavior in the first place, but if your pet does misbehave, show him what he should have done instead. Training your dog is a great way to develop a positive relationship with him.

Mentally stimulating your dog is important to its health and happiness. Taking your dog for long walks outside of your property, or fun chewy toys are fun activities your pet can participate in. If you dont keep your dog entertained, they will make their own fun by wreaking havoc on your belongings.

You should begin dog training during puppy stages if possible. Young dogs respond eagerly to training, and better than adult canines do. Teaching your dog good behavior from a young age is great way to help it grow as a pet that becomes respectful.

You can try a little bit of ingenuity if you are going with crate training for your indoor dog or puppy. If they dont want to go in the crate, try luring them in with a treat or chew bone. The puppy will want to enter the kennel to retrieve the treat. After your dog goes into the crate, give positive reinforcement to increase the chance that he will go into the crate again.

Make sure you have your dog fixed when he or she is about six months old. This should be happening roughly at the same time as the first obedience class. A spayed or neutered dog is a better pet and a more attentive obedience student. Your dog will be happier and healthier, and they will live a longer life.

If you catch your puppy chewing on things, stop him. That way your puppy will learn what it is allowed to chew on, and it will not be as likely to chew on the wrong things when you cannot keep a close eye on him.

Do not let other sources of stress affect your training sessions with your dog. Remember this: if your puppy has not mis-behaved immediately beforehand, every interaction you have with him should be a positive one.

When training your puppy, avoid tug-of-war type games. These, along with chasing and wresting, can encourage them to bite your hands. You dont want them doing that, so you should wait until they are older and more mature to play those games.

Make a point to enjoy your time with your dog while you are training. Try and develop a bond with your dog by playing with him, it will only encourage the dog to want to please you more during training. Although dog training can be fun, you dont really want to spend all your time in training mode.

Now that you have received the helpful advice in this article, you should now be aware how easy it is to train your dog. With a positive attitude and sufficient knowledge, dog training can be a huge success. A dog will become an even better pet thanks to the owners patience and training.

More about Kennel Cough

Just to clarify the situation regarding Kennel Cough.

We have not had any coughing dogs at training classes but we would like everyone to be aware of the condition so that we can avoid the chance of spreading it amongst our dogs.

For those who may not know very much about it, Kennel Cough passes from dog to dog much like humans pass on colds and flu. Dogs dont have to have been in kennels to catch it, just having contact with an affected dog. Most healthy dogs that catch it will get over it very quickly and easily but it can be more of a problem in young pups and older dogs with problems.

If your dog does have a cough, get it checked by your vet, avoid other dogs and please dont bring it to classes until it is well again. If it has been in contact with affected dogs then you should also keep it away from classes until you know for sure that it hasnt contracted Kennel Cough.

Dog training the basic commands

Dog training - the basic commands

There are of course many reasons for owners to want a calm, obedient and faithful dog. For one thing, obedient and trained dogs are happier dogs, less likely to get into tussles with people or with other dogs. Another reason is that many communities require that the dogs living in their neighborhoods be well trained. This is especially true for many breeds thought to have aggression and behavior problems - dog breeds like pit bulls and rottweilers for instance.
And of course, training your dog well will also make he or she a much better family companion, especially in households where there are young children.

Many studies have shown that proper dog training makes a big impact when it comes to cutting down the number of dog bites and other behavior problems encountered by dog owning households.

When considering training your own dog, or having someone else help you train it, there are certain basic commands that must be mastered in order for a dog to be considered truly trained. These basic commands include: "Heel "- Respond to the word "No" - "Sit" - "Stay" and "Down".

Dog training does much more than just create an obedient, willing companion. Training your dog properly actually strengthens the bond that already exists between dog and handler. Dogs are pack animals, and they look to their pack leader to tell them what to do. The key to successful dog training is to set yourself up as that pack leader.

Establishing yourself as pack leader is a very important concept for any potential dog trainer to understand. There is only one leader in every pack of dogs, and the owner must establish him or herself as the dominant animal. Failure to do so leads to all manner of behavior problems. A properly trained dog will respond properly to all the owners commands, and will not display anxiety, displeasure or confusion.

A good dog training program will focus on allowing the dog to learn just what is expected of it, and will use positive reinforcement to reward desired behaviors. In addition to making the dog a good member of the community, obedience training is a great way to fulfill some of the dogs own needs, including the need for exercise, the security that comes with knowing what is expected of it, a feeling of accomplishment and a good working relationship with its handler.

Dog training gives the dog an important job to do, and an important goal to reach. Giving the dog a job is more important than you may think. Dogs were originally bred by humans to do important work, such as herding sheep, guarding property and protecting people. Many dogs today have no important job to do, and this can often lead to boredom and neurotic behavior.

Basic obedience training, and ongoing training sessions, provide the dog with an important job to do. This is especially important for high energy breeds like German shepherds and border collies. Training sessions are a great way for these high energy dogs to use up their extra energy and simply to enjoy themselves. Incorporating playtime into your dog training sessions is a great way to prevent both yourself and your dog from becoming bored. Playing with your dog helps to strengthen the all important bond between you - the pack leader - and your dog.

Leash training will be discussed in the next post.

Getting Rid of the Mess Dog Potty Training

By Randy John

Nobody wants or needs an extra mess in their house, especially from a pet dog. If you have just gotten your first dog, or haven’t been able to control the dog’s behaviors, then you can follow these simple tips to help with dog potty training. This can help everyone to have a more pleasant time when they are in the house.

Even if you have just gotten a new puppy, you don’t want to procrastinate dog potty training. As soon as the dog steps into your home is the time to begin the training. Every owner will have unique ways of doing this, but most agree on some simple things. The first is to make sure that you catch the dog doing their business in the wrong place right away. If you wait for too long, they won’t know why you are punishing them. Because of this rule, some owners will have their dogs on leashes where they can watch them in order to ensure they are catching them in the act.

As soon as you catch your dog, the dog potty training begins. You can do this by stopping the dog and tell them ‘bad dog.’ Make sure that they understand why by showing them the mess that they are making or have already made. Directly after you have told them no, you can then move them outside. Redirecting them to a different area, and specifically to a spot made for all of their bathroom needs is an effective part of the communication to offer for your dog.

After this point, you will need to make sure that you can use positive reinforcement in order to help your dog understand what is right. If they continue their business outside, wait until they have finished then tell them that they are a good dog. You can even let them know by giving them a treat to help them understand that what they did was good. You should never expect your dog to know what you mean with the dog potty training right away. Depending on the dog, it will take repetitive times for them to understand what you mean. It will take a dog anywhere from five to one-hundred times to understand what you are trying to communicate to them. Consistency is a key word to keep in mind as you train.

One of the other parts of dog potty training that you can keep in mind is to give the dog options. For instance, if you know you will be gone from your house for a long time you can use this same technique to teach them to go on newspaper in one area of your house. This will help them to keep you pleased. You can also keep them in a pet taxi for a specified amount of time while you are gone, which will not give them a chance to conduct their business while you are away.
If you are dog potty training, you want to make sure to let your dog know exactly what you want. When they get older, you will be glad that you did. Being consistent and communicative are the two keys to making sure that you are able to complete successful dog training.

Shock Collar Dog Training the fast and simple Way

Dog training having a shock collar is a great method to quickly and easily train your pet. Because of the training shock collar dogs are coerced into behaving faster and stop them from being distracted too much time that could hinder your dog training.

Shock collars and then any type of collar training may appear type of cruel, however they dont actually shock your dog. The shock is much more of the stimulation like when someone gets shocked by static electricity after walking over carpet using their socks on. It causes no permanent harm for that dog and it is probably the most effect dog training techniques available.

To begin you need to set the stimulation degree of the collar towards the lowest amount the dog can sense, we do not wish to fry our furry little friend will we? (Just kidding, although it is kinda mean to achieve the jolt on its highest setting when its not essential ) By sensing, I am talking about some type of reaction in the dog where one can tell they spot the stimulation, for example an ear twitch, or perhaps a slight jerk, scratching just like a flea is biting them, or another obvious sign.

The first type of shock collar training we will discuss is behavior avoidance, this is actually the most typical technique that individuals uses shock collars for. The next time your pet does something you cant stand, like engaging in the garbage can and creating a mess from the trash, place the shock collar on the dog and watch for him to approach the garbage can, once he gets close to the trash can provide him a buzz until he moves from the trash can.

Repeat this course of action each time your dog gets close to the trash can. Now you must to become in conjuction with the shock collar dog training, otherwise your dog will become familiar with the collar is exactly what is really resulting in the stimulation, rather than thinking it is the trash can. Eventually your dog can get the purpose and can leave the garbage can alone.

The next type of shock collar training involves teaching your dog to recall. Recall is how your dog simply learns to maneuver for the owner when he receives the shock. This really is helpful for if you are outside together with your dog and that he becomes distracted with a car, as well as helps simply to keep your dog who are around you. Eventually your dog will become familiar with to stay towards the owners side like glue.

To start the recall dog training whenever your dog is from he has some stimulation after which advice the dog in your direction, either by calling him, or getting anyone to push him in your direction, etc. Once he moves inside a few steps individuals immediately stop the stimulation. Soon your dog will become familiar with the safe destination for a be is as simple as the owners side, or inside the immediate vicinity from the owner, and can stay there to avoid being shocked.

The last kind of shock collar training, which is not actually an exercise technique or anything, but its the dogs constant a reaction to the collar, because he soon learns to simply accept the collar, and begins anticipating the shock. Its known as avoidance training. Eventually your dog will become familiar with you may anticipate the shock and then try to prevent it as being almost as much ast possible. Following this point your dog will often do whatever needs doing not receiving shocked. This really is good because he then will more often than not attempt to beat the shock collar, with only infrequent reminders its there.

Dog training having a shock collar is an extremely effective approach to dog training thats completely humane and saves considerable time. Additionally, it gives you beneficial training techniques like behavior avoidance, recall training and avoidance training. Avoidance training and recall are a few things that may be very difficult to show to some stubborn dog using normal methods when the dog does not want to pay attention. There more dog shock collar training techniques that Ive yet to relate, i have listed basics.

Training your dog to not pull on the leash

Pulling on the leash is one of the most common misbehaviors seen on all kinds of dogs. Puppies and adult dogs alike can often be seen taking their owners for walks, instead of the other way around. Pulling on the leash can be much more than an annoying habit.

Leash pulling can lead to escape in the case of a break in the collar or leash, and an out of control, off leash dog can be both destructive and dangerous to itself and to others.
Leash pulling can result from a variety of different things.
In some cases, the dog may simply be so excited to go for a walk that he or she is unable to control themselves. In other cases, the dog sees itself as the leader of the pack, and he or she simply takes the "leadership position" at the front of the pack.

If excitement is the motivation for leash pulling, simply giving the dog a few minutes to calm down can often be a big help. Simply stand with the dog on the leash for a couple minutes and let the initial excitement of the upcoming walk pass. After the initial excitement has worn off, many dogs are willing to walk calmly on their leash.
If the problem is one of control, however, some retraining may be in order.

All dog training starts with the owner establishing him or herself as the alpha dog, or pack leader, and without this basic respect and understanding, no effective training can occur. For dogs exhibiting these types of control issues, a step back to basic obedience commands is in order. These dogs can often be helped through a formal obedience school structure. The dog trainer will of course be sure to train the handler as well as the dog, and any good dog trainer will insist on working with the dog owner as well as the dog.

The basis of teaching the dog to walk calmly on the lead is teaching it to calmly accept the collar and lead. A dog that is bouncing up and down while the collar is being put on will not walk properly. Begin by asking your dog to sit down, and insisting that he sit still while the collar is put on. If the dog begins to get up, or gets up on his own after the collar is on, be sure to sit him back down immediately. Only begin the walk after the dog has sat calmly to have the collar put on, and continued to sit calmly as the leash is attached.

Once the leash is attached, it is important to make the dog walk calmly toward the door. If the dog jumps or surges ahead, gently correct him with a tug of the leash and return him to a sitting position. Make the dog stay, then move on again. Repeat this process until the dog is walking calmly by your side. Repeat the above process when you reach the door. The dog should not be allowed to surge out of the door, or to pull you through the open door. If the dog begins this behavior, return the dog to the house and make him sit quietly until he can be trusted to walk through the door properly.

Starting the walk in control is vital to creating a well mannered dog.
As you begin your walk, it is vital to keep the attention of the dog focused on you at all times. Remember, the dog should look to you for guidance, not take the lead himself. When walking, it is important to stop often. Every time you stop, your dog should stop. Getting into the habit of asking your dog to sit down every time you stop is a good way to keep your dogs attention focused on you. Make sure your dog is looking at you, then move off again. If the dog begins to surge ahead, immediately stop and ask the dog to sit. Repeat this process until the dog is reliability staying at your side.

Each time the dog does what you ask him to, be sure to reward him with a treat, a toy or just your praise. Remember that if your dog pulls on the leash and you continue to walk him anyway, you are inadvertently rewarding that unwanted behavior. Dogs learn whether you are teaching them or not, and learning the wrong things now will make learning the right things later that much harder. It is important to be consistent in your expectations. Every time the dog begins to pull ahead, immediately stop and make the dog sit. Continue to have the dog sit quietly until his focus is solely on you. Then start out again, making sure to immediately stop moving if the dog surges ahead.

Obedience training and your dog will be next.

Children and Toy Dog Breeds Fact Verses Fiction

By Bill Knell

Because my wife is a toy dog breeder, it isn’t unusual for her to get several calls a week from people who practically beg her to sell them a puppy. They cite their financial and social ability to care for the puppy and often try and avoid the question of children in the household. As a rule, my wife finds this humorous. People shouldn’t have to beg, fill out a twenty-page adoption application or hide the fact that they have children to purchase a puppy. It’s pet protection gone wild.

There isn’t an honest or ethical Dog Breeder in the world who would send a beloved pup to someone they had questions about. Unfortunately, it’s very difficult and not entirely lawful to make that kind of determination. In most States it’s technically illegal to provide some sort of ‘test’ for a consumer to be able to purchase a product. That comes later and isn‘t the responsibility of the Breeder. A good example of a similar situation would be buying a car.

If a person has the cash or credit to purchase a vehicle and possesses a current drivers license, they get a car or the dealership gets sued in most places. The dealership can’t run a check to see how many DWI summonses the person has had or how many times they have been convicted of speeding or some other moving violation. If they drive their new vehicle in an irresponsible manner, it’s up to the Police and Courts to decide if they should continue to do so.

There’s a lot of difference between a living thing and a vehicle, but not in the eyes of most state laws. If a Breeder feels that a puppy may be in danger, they can always take the chance of reporting the new owner to animal protection authorities. Those authorities will come to the owner’s home and check on the welfare of the puppy. If the puppy is not being properly cared for, it will likely be removed from the premises. However, most people that spend a substantial amount of money for a puppy are unlikely to mistreat or fail to care for it.

The quest for the perfect puppy owner is an obsession with many Toy Dog Breeders. I have always viewed these people as being selfish. They would keep every puppy if they could and probably have more dogs then they should already. This type of person will tend to restrict purebred registrations fearing that someone else might benefit from their years of careful breeding by having a litter of their own. Their concern for animal welfare extends well beyond the norm, has more to do with their personal obsessions then anything else and doesn’t take into consideration the joy a puppy can bring into a new owner’s life. Breeders like these have no real loyalty to their customers and view them as a necessary evil to move out extra pups they cannot keep.

If someone who is looking for a toy dog breed puppy can get past the egos and obsessions of these kinds of Breeders, the next hurdle they are likely to face is passing the ‘children’ test. Many toy dog breeders refuse to sell their pups to people with children under the age of sixteen. Some will actually refuse to sell a puppy to anyone with children under twenty-one living in their household. That’s ironic when children are likely to benefit the most from caring for a puppy.

Children are not the enemy when it comes to the health of toy dog breeds. The enemy is owner apathy. To my knowledge, more puppies have been injured in households where there are no children then in those where kids are a part of the puppy care process. That’s because adults are busy and will often forget to feed and water their animals, leave them unattended for too long in places or temperatures dangerous for them or place them with pet sitters who can’t even care for a goldfish, let alone a dog.

While it would be unwise to leave very young children alone with a puppy of any size, most children can easily be taught how to care for one. As a parent with seven children, I can attest to this. In the many years that my wife has been breeding toy dogs, not one of our puppies has ever been injured (and certainly none by our kids). Just the opposite. Our children have helped care for the puppies and alerted my wife if one seemed sluggish or might need a change of diet.

The most common argument made against allowing children access to toy dog breeds or most any puppy is that a child shouldn’t be allowed to learn responsibility at the cost of the health or life of an animal. While no one would argue with that logic, one wonders if that should apply to all animals, or just dogs. After all, pet stores sell tens of thousands of fish, small reptiles, rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters and snakes to children every day. Are the lives of those pets any less precious or valuable then that of dogs?

In reality, puppies and adult dogs are much easier to care for then fish, reptiles, rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters and snakes. It would seem an obvious mistake to ask a child to take on the responsibility of caring for a high maintenance pet when a puppy or adult dog is available. It’s also wrong to believe that toy dog breeds can be far more fragile then larger ones. For example, more German Shepards become ill or die each year from low blood sugar issues then any single toy breed, despite the fact that people often associate that problem with smaller breed dogs.

When it comes to children and puppies, it’s all about rules no matter what size breed is chosen. Children learn by example. If adults in the home are responsible with pets, the kids will follow that example. Simple things like cleaning up after, feeding, watering and securing the location of a puppy are essentials that any child can easily be taught. Every one of my children learned how to take care of dogs by watching us. It didn’t take long for them to understand the importance of feeding, watering and cleaning up after a pet on schedule. After watching us take care of our dogs, they wanted to take part in the process and were happy to lend a hand. Our younger children learned from our older kids.

When considering the addition of a puppy to a household of any size, there are some basic considerations. The first and foremost being the ability of household members to train, care for and spend quality time with a pet. Puppies are not play things for people of any age. They are living creatures capable of a surprising number of feelings and emotions. The next important consideration is how all the members of your household will react to a new pet. Will the puppy be a welcomed addition, or a point of contention and jealousy? A puppy should bring joy into the lives of people, not more problems.

If the members of your household all agree that a puppy would be a good addition to the family and they are ready, willing and able to meet the emotional and physical requirements of a puppy, then start your search. However, it’s important for children and adults alike to understand that puppies and adult dogs need care, love and attention everyday of the year. Their needs do not take a break for vacations, holidays, school or work schedules.

Puppies of any size or breed can bring a huge amount of joy into a household. It’s wrong to believe that children are a threat to a toy dog’s safety or quality of life. More puppies of all sizes are killed or injured each year by falling or accidentally being flung out of cars and trucks then have ever been injured by children. That’s because adults fail to properly secure their pets in a vehicle. We’ve all seen the idiots who think it’s cute to allow their pets to hang out the window or be bounced around like loose groceries in the back of a van, SUV or pick-up.

If you ask them, most veterinarians will tell you that the vast majority of injuries to dogs of any size are caused by adults, not children. If injuries do occur because a child failed to secure their animal properly or got involved with some sort of rough play during which a pet was injured, they are far out-numbered by injuries involving dogs being watched or cared for by adults. After examining statistics compiled by various veterinarian organizations, rescue groups, breeders and government entities, I’ve found that more puppies and dogs die each year during routine teeth cleaning procedures in veterinary offices then are injured by children.

In the end, it’s not about the children, it’s about the adults in a household. If you do not have time to spend with your children, do not even consider bringing a puppy in as a replacement for your attention. You will not have the time needed to supervise your child as they learn to care for and train their new pet. If you do have enough time to teach your kids how to care for a puppy and supervise them throughout the process, it can be a wonderful experience for everyone involved (including the puppy).
