Introducing Volcano

2011, the year that was.

Its a new year and I am looking forward to a beautiful year with new targets to be achieved. Too many things happened in the past year and I just want to forget and look forward to 2012.

Fellow bloggers I am back doing what I like the most and that is educating people and sharing information on the welfare of our dogs.

I have a new puppy that I am busy training at the moment, her name is Volcano, I have no idea as to why the name but it was given by my son, Lwazi as he is the one who names all my dogs. She is an intelligent puppy full of life and has all the energy and is always willing to learn. She is three months old.

I have started her on the basic training and is mastering fetch than all other commands. But it wont be long before she is up to speed with other basic commands.

I intend enrolling her at the South African Dog Training College as soon as all her innoculations are done. No trial by error here, I want her to be trained where I learned all that I know today as far as Dog training is concerned.

Hope you will enjoy following Volcanos training until she becomes the next Champion

Stop breeding for the sake of breeding breed to improve something on that dog you want to breed

There is a craze going on about dog breeding and it makes me sick to the bone. People have a wrong perception that there is a lot of money to be made in dog breeding. As a result they mate anything with a tail. This so wrong as it is very expensive to raise puppies that you will eventually struggle to sell.
Not sure what one can do to ensure that people get to understand this concept. Breed only to improve the breed, invest on a good female and pay a stud fee for a champion dog to breed from. Dont just breed from any dog with a tail.
On the picture I am standing next to Pavarotti a Champion dog that died some few years back and no one has bred anything close to that dog, but there are many dog breeders who breed on daily basis.
Thats my take.

It is that time of the year once again!!!!!!!!

I would like to take this time to wish all of you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Enjoy with your friends and family and remember to make a positive contribution to those who are less fortunate. There are just too many people out there who are destitute and they need to be helped in one way or another. Lets become a giving nation, all the old clothes that we have lying somewhere in the boxes will make a big difference if we give them to people who are in need.

On an animal note, lets not forget our pets. To them there is no festive season, they love us the same way all the time. Lets not abandon them, if you are going away please ensure that you have arranged with a shelter organisation to look after them or a neighbour or friend that you trust. Looking after animals is a challenge, especially if you are not an animal person as its not about throwing food and changing water, you need to spend time with them. You need to check their health as they can never come up to you and say, I have been poisoned or i am not feeling well. So when you decide on the people who will look after your pets have that in mind.

I am spending the holidays with my dogs as the kids are gone to have fun. I will be running around and walking them every morning and having a great time. I will also be looking after some of my neighbours animals, that is if they decide to involve me.

Make an informed decision before deciding to buy a puppy as a present for your child.

Once again, enjoy the festive season and looking forward to chatting to you in the new year.

Lets All Arrive Alive

  • Take breaks as you go on your long journeys.
  • Dont drink and drive.
  • Safety belts all the time, even those on the back seat.
  • No chatting on the cellphones while you drive.
  • Avoid road rage, drive away as you have nothing to loose.
  • Take precautions before assisting people involved in accidents.
  • No lift to strangers.

DO NOT OVER SPEND, JANUARY AND SCHOOL FEES IS AROUND THE CORNER

National Working Pastoral Breeds and a new Champion!

Malvern was the setting for last weekends National Working & Pastoral Breeds Champ show and a few of our members attended the show.

Elaine also had a great day, Milo won his Puppy Dog class plus Best Puppy and Zeta took another CC. The winners of Post Grad and Limit Bitch were also Kumormai breeding and I think it was Zetas litter sister who took the RBCC.

It was also well worth the long journey down for Carol, she had a win in Junior Dog, Limit Bitch (sorry, dont have names) plus the RBCC, and Chaos won her Puppy Bitch class and also Best Puppy.

Big congratulations to you all!

Whippet Club of Scotland Champ Show

Niamh, John, Liz and Heather were all at the Whippet Club of Scotlands recent championship show and there were good results for all.

Niamhs Mia was 4th in Puppy Bitch and Keano 5th in Open Dog. Keanos brother Jake, belonging to Niamhs dad John, gained his stud book number when he was placed 3rd in Limit Dog. Both brothers now have their stud book numbers - quite an achievement when whippets have such large classes.

Lizs Maisie was 5th in Minor Puppy Bitch and Poppy was 3rd in Limit Bitch.

Heathers Mica (hope thats spelt right Heather!) won the veteran class and Best Veteran In Show!

Congratulations!

Getting Rid of the Mess Dog Potty Training

By Randy John

Nobody wants or needs an extra mess in their house, especially from a pet dog. If you have just gotten your first dog, or haven’t been able to control the dog’s behaviors, then you can follow these simple tips to help with dog potty training. This can help everyone to have a more pleasant time when they are in the house.

Even if you have just gotten a new puppy, you don’t want to procrastinate dog potty training. As soon as the dog steps into your home is the time to begin the training. Every owner will have unique ways of doing this, but most agree on some simple things. The first is to make sure that you catch the dog doing their business in the wrong place right away. If you wait for too long, they won’t know why you are punishing them. Because of this rule, some owners will have their dogs on leashes where they can watch them in order to ensure they are catching them in the act.

As soon as you catch your dog, the dog potty training begins. You can do this by stopping the dog and tell them ‘bad dog.’ Make sure that they understand why by showing them the mess that they are making or have already made. Directly after you have told them no, you can then move them outside. Redirecting them to a different area, and specifically to a spot made for all of their bathroom needs is an effective part of the communication to offer for your dog.

After this point, you will need to make sure that you can use positive reinforcement in order to help your dog understand what is right. If they continue their business outside, wait until they have finished then tell them that they are a good dog. You can even let them know by giving them a treat to help them understand that what they did was good. You should never expect your dog to know what you mean with the dog potty training right away. Depending on the dog, it will take repetitive times for them to understand what you mean. It will take a dog anywhere from five to one-hundred times to understand what you are trying to communicate to them. Consistency is a key word to keep in mind as you train.

One of the other parts of dog potty training that you can keep in mind is to give the dog options. For instance, if you know you will be gone from your house for a long time you can use this same technique to teach them to go on newspaper in one area of your house. This will help them to keep you pleased. You can also keep them in a pet taxi for a specified amount of time while you are gone, which will not give them a chance to conduct their business while you are away.
If you are dog potty training, you want to make sure to let your dog know exactly what you want. When they get older, you will be glad that you did. Being consistent and communicative are the two keys to making sure that you are able to complete successful dog training.

Weimaraner Club of Scotland Open Obedience Show

The Cochrane Hall, Alva, hosts a number of shows and last Sunday it was the turn of the Weimaraner Club of Scotlands Open Obedience show.

The hall sits in a park with the Ochil hills as a stunning backdrop. Youd never guess from the photo above just what a mudbath dogs and handlers had to contend with in the rings! Many dogs found the conditions hard to cope with, especially when it came to having to sit or lie down in puddles!

Jennys Brint took the wet in his stride and took 2nd place in Beginners, just a quarter of a point behind the winner...so close yet again to winning out of Beginners. Margaret and Ellie were at their first open show and they also coped with all the mud and were placed a worthy 5th in Pre-Beginners. Well done to you both!

Thanks for the photos Margaret.

Thinking of Getting a New Puppy Make Sure That you Apply your Dog Training Skills Right Away

Author: Chris Simpson

If you have never owned a puppy before, this article should help to prepare you for the many things that you should know and expect from your puppy and some of your responsibilities as the owner, as far as how you should go about properly training them. Dog training is very important and the earlier that you start with it, the much better off that you will be, no doubt about that one. Puppies come into our homes and you need to keep in mind that even though they are very small usually, they are also very, very inquisitive and will surprisingly catch on to many things very quickly. It is so important for anyone who is considering to get themselves a little puppy to definitely remember that you will just have to make sure that you apply some dog training skills on them right away, the longer that you put it off, the more difficult they will be to train.

Rewarding our little puppies with tons of praise and even some little treats, is the best way to teach them right from wrong. They love to make their owners happy and will go out of their way to every single time, as long as you have constantly given them that praise that they deserve for being such a good puppy and listening to your commands. Everyone wants to be the proud owner of a very well behaved lil puppy but most people do not want to put forth the effort to actually try and get their puppies trained by a professional or train the puppy themselves, which is why so many of us really need to get educated a little bit more about puppy care and the many reasons why it is so very important to properly train our animals, especially our little curious puppies. They are so adorable but can turn out to be very ugly later on if they are not immediately properly trained, so that they will know exactly how they are really supposed to act.

There are just a few things that everyone who owns a puppy should remember, when they are ready to begin applying their dog training skills. Learning just the few basics on dog training will really help to prevent any bad behavior out of your puppy in the near future. It will only take a little bit of your time and a great deal of consistency ofcourse, and then you will have the opportunity to show off your dog training skills to all of your friends and family, they will all be very impressed by your pooches good manners and adorable tricks. There are so many different books available that can teach you even more about dog training and all of the different dog training techniques. You will be so surprised once you begin learning more about this, surprised at how simple things could be for you and your new little friend with the most appropriate dog training skills.

Dog Training Collars An alternative choice to Shock Collars

Spray dog training collars provide a safe, humane option to shock collars along with other ways of aversion training for your pet. Breaking your dog of improper habits, for example barking incessantly or stealing food, could be a difficult and challenging chore. Many pet owners turn to aversion training using devices like electric collars to show their pets to not hop on people or participate in other objectionable behaviors. Spray dog training collars attain the same benefits with no painful consequences.

What are Spray Training Collars?

Spray training collars make use of a remote radio control release a a harmless, non-toxic spray or gas if you catch your pet participating in the behaviour you need to eliminate. The spray doesnt burn or sting - it really surprises your dog by having an unexpected stimuli. The momentary startle interrupts the misbehavior, which provides the opportunity to immediately reward him to be a great dog. Inside a surprisingly short period of time, your pet will become familiar with that being "good" elicits praise and reward instead of learning that being bad elicits pain.

Available Dog Training Collars

Several companies have spray training collars on the market, all of them counting on a rather different method or kind of spray. The main one you select is determined by your choice. As the collars could be a bit pricey, many retailers rent the machine and also you only buy the gas or spray cartridges to be used using the collar.

Petsafe Remote Spray Dog collar is really a remote training device that includes a collar that emits a lemon-scented spray or perhaps a tone when activated through the radio handheld remote control. The control works from the distance as high as 300 meters. It provides four amounts of spray to be able to pick the one which gets your dogs attention. You should use spray and tone, alone or together, to strengthen your teaching.

The Masterplus Pro training system includes a receiver collar along with a small remote transmitter. When activated, the collar emits a harmless, odorless spray that interrupts your pet and enables you to regain his attention and divert him to some more desired activity.

The Jetcare Education Pro dog collar is comparable to the Masterplus Pro but provides a tone too as the spray to be able to tailor working out. Radio stations transmitter works well as much as 300 meters, and may emit whether cold spray or perhaps a tone thats audible for your dog.

Spray Commander provides the same features as the more costly options, including a waterproof collar that continues to be effective even when your dog decides to consider a dip within the lake with it. Such as the others, radio stations handheld remote control works well at as much as 300 meters, and also the batteries for that remote are rechargeable.

All from the dog collars are adjustable to suit necks as much as 28 inches, so there is a collar which will match your pup. The spray collar technology provides quick, good success without relying on shouting, electric shock or any other aversion techniques. Why train your pet with fear or pain when theres an alternative choice available?

Tips For Dog Obedience School

It may be that you have brought a dog in your residence and have also learnt that it due to its own breed is more intelligent than others. What should do you after that? Will you start thinking that there is no such necessity of training? The dog is so intelligent that it will obey your commands without any training! If you think in this way, you are certainly living in a fools paradise. Each and every dog should be trained and thats the only way to groom it and make it obedient.

Its better to remember that no dog is so intelligent for which there is no requirement of training. For all these make sure that you start the obedience training without any further delay. Now where should you go? There are many obedience schools in the market. But in any way the dog owner seems to be the best trainer since none can understand the pet like him. As the trainer it will be best if you start your own school in your residence.

Now everyone asks of the essence of obedience training. Perhaps they forget to realize that this course is very important for a healthy relationship between the pet and the owner. However this relationship is not synonymous to friendship and never the owner and the pet can be good friends. A dog always lives in packs. Due to genetic influences it bows before the leader only. For this reason you shall have to be the ideal leader and thus earn the reverence or obedience from it. You have perhaps found that a dog doesnt heed to commands of others. But it will do just the opposite if his master commands. This is a way to please the master.

Through training obedience to the pet the dog owner makes the dog an acceptable member of the society. There are several dogs that remain rowdy and annoy every member of the family. Moreover through ceaseless barking, jumping and frequent urination it perturbs the homely atmosphere. The obedience training will groom it for the betterment. On the other hand the training will make it realize the approved behaviors. The rigorous and daily training will at last become able to tame it and bring him out of the bad behaviors. Remember if you succeed in the training only then you can invite others to your home. If not, hell will fall upon you!

In accordance with this the dog obedience training provides a great support to the mental and physical development of your pet. You are the only person who can energize the dog at every time and this makes the acceleration of the training course more than even you can imagine. This is the reason for which dog owners are found to chat with their pets. Never try to evade or ignore the dog. Even for once! Dogs are very emotional. You must keep a close watch on its reactions

Obedience training is necessary for the dogs overall development. Make your own school straight away and also the dog presentable.

Save yourself a lot of time as a dog owner and train your dog to be obedient. It gets so much easier for both you and your dog when you have trained your dog´s obedience. Click here to learn more about training your dog.

Dog training Keeping Your Dog Motivated

Keeping the attention of a dog while training is not always easy.
Dogs can be easily distracted, and it is important to not allow the training sessions to be sabotaged by boredom. Making training fun for the dog and the human alike is vital to creating a happy, well adjusted and well trained dog.

Providing random positive stimuli during the day is a great way to keep the interest of the dog. Doing things the dog enjoys, like walking in the park, riding in the car, and playing with other dogs, is a great way to keep the dogs attention and reward him for small successes. For instance, in order to reward the dog for coming to you, for instance, ask the dog to come to you, without giving any clues about a walk, a car ride, or other treats. After the dog has come to you and obediently sat down, attach the leash and start the reward.

This can be either the aforementioned walk in the park, ride in the car, or anything else the dog likes to do. Providing some kind of reward, whether a treat, a special outing, or just a scratch behind the ears, every time the dog does something you want, is a great way to keep your dog motivated. If the dog knows something great is going to happen every time he obeys your command, he will be motivated to please you every time.

Distraction training
When training any dog, it is important to not let distractions disrupt the training. The dog must be taught to ignore distractions, such as other people, other dogs, other animals and loud noises, and focus on what is being taught These types of distractions can even be used as rewards when training the dog to come when called. For instance, if your dog enjoys playing with other dogs, whether in a local dog park or with the neighbors dogs, let him play freely with those other dogs. Then go into the park or yard and call your dog. When he comes to you, provide lots of praise, treats and other rewards, then immediately allow the dog to go back to playing with his friends.

Repeat this several times and praise the dog each time he comes to you. The dog will quickly learn that coming to you means good things (treats and praise) and not bad ones (being taken away from the park). If the dog does not master this particular type of training right away, try not to get discouraged. So called distraction training is one of the most difficult things to teach.

Dogs are naturally social animals, and breaking away from the pack is one of the most difficult things you can ask your dog to do. Most dogs will be understandably reluctant to leave their canine companions, but it is important to persist.

Training the dog to come to you may require some creativity on your part at first. For instance, waving a favorite toy, or a lure, is a great way to get your dogs attention and put the focus back on you. If your dog has been clicker trained, a quick click can be a good motivator as well. Once the dog begins to get the hang of coming when called, you can begin to reduce and eliminate the visual cues and focus on getting the dog to respond to your voice alone.

It is important that the dog respond to voice commands alone, since you will not always have the availability of a toy or other lure.

Training your dog not to chase people, bicycles, joggers, etc.
Dogs by nature are predatory animals, and all predatory animals share the motivation to chase fleeing objects. While this may be a natural instinct, it is not appropriate when those fleeing objects are joggers, bicyclists or the mailman.

Training the dog not to chase people and bicycles is an important thing to do, and it is best to start that training as early as possible. Starting when the dog is still small and non-threatening is important, particularly with breeds that grow very large, or with breeds that have a reputation for being very aggressive.

Many people respond to being chased by a dog, especially a large dog, with understandable fear, and it is best for yourself and your dog that he be trained not to chase before he reaches a threatening size.

Some dogs are easier to train away from chasing than others. Breeds that have been used for hunting or herding often retain much more of their chasing instincts than other types of dogs, for instance. No matter what breed of dog you are working with, however, it is important to not allow him off the leash until his chasing behavior has been curbed. Allowing an untrained dog off the leash is dangerous, irresponsible and illegal.

Before you expose your dog to a situation where he will want to chase someone or something, be sure to train him in a safe, controlled area like a fenced in yard. It is important for the dog to be able to focus and concentrate on you, and for him to understand what behavior you want. The dog must be given the opportunity to repeatedly perform the behavior you want while in this controlled setting.

The training session should be started indoors in the dogs home.
The dog should be put on a leash and the owner and the dog should stand at one end of a hallway or a room. The owner then waves a tennis ball in front of the dog but does not allow him to touch it. After that, the tennis ball is rolled to the other end of the hallway or the room, and the command "Off" is used to tell the dog not to chase the ball. If the dog starts out after the ball, use the command "Off" once again and give a firm tug on the leash.

When doing this type of training, it is vital that the dog not be allowed to touch the ball. If he actually reaches the ball, he may think that "Off" means to get the ball. This exercise should be repeated several times, until the dog has learned the meaning of the "Off" command. When the dog responds correctly by not chasing the ball, he should be rewarded with a special treat. After the dog seems to understand his new game, move to another room and try the same thing. Repeat the exercise in several rooms of the house, in the garage, etc. After the dog has seemingly mastered the game and learned the meaning of the "Off" command, you can work with him without the leash, but still only in a safe area like your own home or a fenced in yard.

It may take some time for the dog to fully master control of his chasing instinct, and it is important not to rush the process, or to leave the dog off leash until you are sure he is fully trained. To test the training in the real world, enlist the assistance of a friend to pose as a jogger. It is important that the dog does not see and recognize this person; he has to assume that it is a stranger in order for the test to be valid. Stand with the dog on his leash and have your friend jog by a couple of times while you do the "Off" exercise. If the dog does as he is asked, be sure to provide lots of praise and treats. If he starts after the "jogger", give a firm reminder by tugging on the leash.

Eliminating problem behaviors will be discussed next.

This method is checked out by most like a creation that should not have been produced to start with which any owner who runs on the shock collar is been inhumane for their canine.

The truth is that the dog training shock collar doesnt just shock your dog they often include three enforcements which are: shock (obviously), vibrate and sound. Every single one of those applications may be used by themselves or perhaps in in conjunction with each other youll also find a variety of amounts of intensity that you can now set the unit up for to make use of on the dog. All amendments could be activated automatically once the dog barks or moves sharply inside a thrusting fashion or they may be dealt out using a handheld remote control device held through the owner.

The aim is you possess the collar set to some level that after it activated your dog shows signs and symptoms of been diverted from what theyre expressing their hostility towards. After you have found the amount that performs this for your dog then thats the level that you simply keep your device at.

To help you to obtain the precise level to hand out to the dog you have to constantly begin at the smallest possibly setting after which come up. My advice and recommendation is you steer clear of the shock setting if possibly which is definitely made by simply using the vibration and sound functions only.

In summary Personally, i dont think a dog training shock collar is brutish nevertheless Id just use one like a last measure having a dog that has difficult hostility issues. Id also suggest that you consult with your Veterinary Surgeon in front of you purchasing one simply because they can let you know in case your dog is alright medically to make use of.
