How To Tell If A Payday Loan Is Right For You

When training your dog, do not treat your dog like he is a person with a great intellectual capacity. Making this assumption when training your dog results in disappointment and even disaster. However, you are about to learn how to properly treat your dog so you can train it.

Include plenty of physical activity in your dogs training routine. Dont let your dog sit around with nothing to do. They wont get any exercise that way and if theyre too bored, they might sniff around and get into some trouble. A bored dog is very difficult to train. Your dog will be more relaxed and willing to listen if he is exercised frequently. Go on extended walks or runs with your dog on a regular basis.

If your dog has problems with destructive chewing, he may be suffering from anxiety or boredom. If you keep him in a crate and give him toys that are safe for him to chew on, your dog and your house will stay safe.

You do not want to over-stress your new pup by trying to teach him too much too quickly. Puppies have short attention spans, therefore keep your sessions short and provide ample amounts of praise. Overdoing it could cause them to forget what was learned, and they may see the training as negative; thus, making sessions harder for you later.

It takes small steps to crate train your puppy; they must become accustomed to it. After they become used to each individual step and do not mind going inside the crate, try shutting the door and giving them treats with the door closed. Leave them in for short periods of time, as little as 10 seconds. Work up from there. If the dog becomes agitated, slow down a little more to make them more comfortable.

Dog training should be a fun and rewarding experience. Keep training to a short 10-15 minute session; much longer and your dogs attention will wander. The dog should be given ample rewards in various forms. Your dog should enjoy lots of praise for a job well-done. You and your dog should both enjoy training.

Whenever you are teaching a dog a multi-step task, reduce it to a series of smaller tasks. A good example is training the dog to pick up the morning paper for you. To begin this process, you have to teach him how he can hold onto an object. Next, he must learn the name of the object. After this, teach him to pick the object up. Finally, your dog should learn to bring an object to you on command. If the behavior is broken down into steps, the dog will more easily understand what is expected of him.

Make sure training has an element of fun incorporated into it. Playful interaction strengthens the bond between you, and will have your dog striving even harder to please you during training. Training can be a good and fun time with your dog, but you should also set aside time that is just for play.

Treats are great incentives when training a dog; however, treats can cause a dog to become overweight, so limit the number offered. The number of treats a dog gets during training can rack up pretty quickly, and a lot of owners overlook this part of their canines diet.

You should never tether two dogs in close proximity to one another. It is just too easy for dogs in such a situation to tangle their leads together, and this can lead to serious injuries for both of them. If dogs get tangled up too severely, one can get wrapped up so badly it could close off the airway, and he could die.

Every puppy in training will make some mistakes in the potty department. To help your training stay on track, clean up any messes right away. The smell from the feces and urine can stay in the carpet, and cause your pet to want to relieve themselves on that spot more often. There are a number of products that will get rid if the smell. Look for them at your favorite pet store.

Positively encourage your dog without using treats. Remember, that dog treats are one way to reward a dog for desired behavior. Unfortunately, you probably dont have a treat in your pocket every single day, especially when you arent in training mode. Hugging or patting your dog is a good way to replace treats.

If you want success in training your dog, you must make sure that your dog has a good activity level throughout his life. By their very nature, most dogs are not sedentary. They need to be active, so they can be happy and healthy. Some examples of ways to get your dog more active would be to put it in a fitness class, take it running, or teach it how to play Frisbee. If you stay active with him, he is not likely to get bored.

After learning some helpful hints on how to get through to your dog and train it to behave to your expectations you simply need to follow what you have learned. After changing your dogs behavior to fit with the tips suggested you can properly train your dog.

Dog Collars Employed for Training Dogs

There are many dog training collars utilized in dog training. Some professional trainers advocate one sort of collar in support of use that kind of collar for training dogs, while other trainers state that kind of collar should not supply in dog training. Obviously, each dog trainer uses their very own approach to dog training, and also the kind of dog collar they will use reflects the dog training method they will use. This information is concerning the various dog training collars, their proper use, and perhaps, the way they are properly put on the dog.

The Slip (aka Choke) Collar

The Slip Collar, also called a Choke Collar, is really a period of chain, nylon rope, or any other fabric, with rings on ends. When the collar is created from chain, its known as a "choke chain". By pushing the chain or fabric through among the rings, a loop could be formed which may be put within the dogs head and round his neck. That leaves another ring free for attaching the leash.

Putting the Slip Collar on the dog With many training, specifically dog obedience training, your dog is generally on the left side from the trainer/handler. To place the collar on the dog correctly, using the dog in your left, negligence the collar attached to the free ring is going within the dogs neck. To check on the collar is on correctly, you are able to pull on the free ring to tighten the collar, then release it. The collar ought to be loose. When the collar isnt on the dog correctly, despite you release the free ring, he collar will remain snugly round the dogs neck. Once the collar is placed on properly and it is snug round the dogs neck the free ring ought to be about 11/2" to 3" in the dogs neck.

Proper technique Slip Collar When training using the Slip Collar, the collar ought to be just behind the dogs ears. The slip collar isnt for pulling or choking your dog. Its to provide your dog a correction, as its needed. The correction is offered by making use of a clear, crisp jerk towards the leash. Which means that you quickly pull on the leash to tighten the collar, then immediately release pressure so the collar is loose. The effectiveness of the jerk ought to be sufficient to find the dogs attention and it is a purpose of the dimensions, build and temperament from the dog. Obviously the effectiveness of a correction for any Beagle will be a lot diverse from one for any German Shepard.

The Martingale Collar

The Martingale Collar is sort of a slip collar for the reason that it tightens once the leash is pulled. The large difference is it are only able to tighten a specific amount in order that it wont choke your dog. It includes a period of fabric having a ring on ends. A brief bit of fabric or chain experiences both rings and it has both its ends attached to one ring, that the leash could be attached. Once the leash is pulled, the collar tightens to in which the two rings touch one another. We have an adjustment so the tightest it may get is simply snug round the dogs neck. Since the Martingale Collar is generally wider compared to Slip Collar, it spreads pressure on the dogs neck and prevents the collar from getting tangled within the dogs fur.

Putting the Martingale Collar on the dog The Martingale collar, after its properly adjusted, is simply slipped within the dogs head and ears. A number of them possess a quick release buckles you can use, particularly if the dog s head is a lot bigger than its neck.

Proper technique Martingale Collar The Martingale Collar can be used in the same manner as the Slip Collar. Its more gentle compared to Slip Collar within the discomfort it provides the dogs, but could be just like effective. Since the Martingale Collar cant choke your dog, you can use it being an everyday collar in addition to a dog collar.

The Prong (aka Pinch) Collar

The Prong Collar, also called a Pinch Collar, is made to simulate how a mother dog disciplines the puppies by pinching your skin on the neck. The prongs from the collar are not shipped to puncture your skin. Some Prong Collars have rubber or plastic tips that may be put on the ends from the prongs. The collar consists of interlocking prongs that form a circle round the dogs neck having a short bit of chain mounted on it exactly the same as with the Martingale Collar. This way, the collar are only able to be tightened so the prongs pinch, such as the penetrate your skin. The dimensions is adjusted with the addition of or removing prongs.

Putting the Prong Collar on the dog The Prong Collar is slipped within the dogs head and ears exactly the same way as the Martingale Collar is. Some Prong Collars possess a latch on the short bit of chain which makes it simpler to put on the dog.

The proper technique Prong Collar It is necessary the Prong Collar is the right size for that dog. You ought to be in a position to place the tip of the little finger between your end from the prong and also the dogs skin once the collar is loose. The Prong Collar looks worse than. It provides the dog another sensation compared to Slip or Martingale Collars. It does not really near the coast on the dogs neck around it pinches the dogs skin. Just like the Slip Collar, the effectiveness of the jerk ought to be sufficient to find the dogs attention.

The Head Collar

The Head Collar is generally made from nylon and it has two basic parts. One circles the dogs neck and also the other is really a noseband that circles his muzzle. Its utilized by trainers who advocate positive training techniques instead of corrective training techniques. The collar controls the dogs head but doesnt restrict the dogs capability to pant, drink or grab objects using its mouth. There are three main Head Collar brands: Halti, Gentle Leader, and Control Ease. Although each is made little differently, all of them work exactly the same way.

Putting the top Collar on the dog The part that circles the dogs neck is correctly adjusted and set on first. The noseband will be set up round the dogs muzzle. Some dogs cant stand this kind of collar and fuss and then try to remove it. For the reason that situation, dog needs to get adjusted towards the collar in small steps with a lot of reinforcement (treats and praise). Your dog needs to be rewarded to permit the collar to become placed on him.

The proper technique Head Collar Unlike while using Slip or Prong Collars, the top Collar isnt jerked. Some veterinarians state that a clear, crisp jerk on the Head Collar can injure the dogs neck. Your dog is guided in to the correct position with a gentle pull on the leash. The concept behind the appearance of the collar is the fact that wherever the top goes, the body follows. Using the noseband round the dogs muzzle, the handler/trainer provides extensive leverage on the dogs head and need much strength to manage your dog. This kind of collar can be used more for controlling your dog and teaching him just to walk on the loose leash compared to basic dog obedience training.

The latter training collars arent usually employed for basic dog obedience training but they are included for completeness.

The Training Harness

The Training Harness may be the latest device created for dog training. Its a basic harness by having an attachment to some collar. Its combined with a leash which has a snap on ends, with one end attached to the harness ring located on the dogs back, and also the other attached to the ring on the strap that circles the dogs chest. Its produced by exactly the same companies which make the top Collars. Although its known as an exercise collar, its main objective would be to teach your dog just to walk on the loose leash. When the dog walks having a loose leash, you can use it as only a walking harness utilizing a normal one-snap leash.

The E-Collars

E-Collars or Electronic Collars contain a collar which has a radio receiver mounted on it. Its produced in such a manner that, when it receives an indication in the transmitter, it provides the dog a little electric shock, similar to you receive from static electricity. It startles your dog instead of hurts your dog. Its used once the dog has been trained with no leash and from the distance. Its not used for basic dog obedience training, but could assist in off leash work. The effectiveness of the shock can be adjusted is bigger and kind of dog its utilized on. The transmitter is really a handheld device that may adjust the effectiveness of the shock and it has a control button thats pushed to manage the shock. Its a lot more expensive than the other training collars.

Dog Food Tips For Preventing Fussy Eaters

By Rebecca Prescott

There is much to recommend feeding your dog homemade dog food if you have the time to prepare it, and make sure you have recipes that give the correct ratio of nutrients, as well as the vitamins and supplements youll need to add. These can be mixed up in a bag, stored, and sprinkled in every meal.

Dogs should have a minimum of 18% protein for maintenance when they are adults, and 22% for reproduction and growth. Fat should be a minimum of 5% for adult dogs, and 8% for reproduction and growth. But the more fat that is in the diet, the more protein there should be. Fat makes dogs, as well as people, eat less by making them feel fuller. If they eat less, and there are less of other essential nutrients like protein and vitamins and minerals, the dog will not get the nourishment it needs.

Generally, commercial pet food is made according to the appropriate guidelines, but care should be taken if significant amounts of other food is added to the diet, and it is high in fat.

But whether youre feeding your dog commercial dog food, or home made dog food, there are a few things to keep in mind so you dont end up with a fussy dog:

* dogs should be fed once a day once they are no longer puppies, or two small meals, no more. Feeding your dog too frequently when he is older can turn him appear like a fussy eater, when he is actually full.

* feeding your dog too regularly can get him into the routine of expecting to eat at those times, too, and may lead to weight gain. Letting him get hungry, and feeding sensibly, will not harm him. In the wild, dogs would eat for once a day until they were completely full.

* Dont stand and stare at your dog waiting for him to eat. He will likely think something is wrong, or something else is coming, and wont eat.

* Dont give into your dog and give him something else straight away if he refuses his meal, as hes effectively training you and not the other way around!

* Theres nothing wrong with feeding your dog a varied diet, but dont keep changing the food because he seems fussy and wont eat it. Make sure nothing is wrong with him physically first, then if he is healthy, take charge of the situation. Put his food down, leave him to it, and then 30 minutes later go and check to see whether its been eaten. If it hasnt, take it away, then at the end of the day put down some fresh food. Repeat the process, and take it away 30 minutes later if it still isnt eaten. This way youll train your dog to eat his food, and not reinforce his behaviour.

Brian Kilcommons has a very interesting method for teaching dogs to eat their food. When the above fails, he prepared the dog food in front of the dog, making lots of yummy noises whilst he did it. He made it slowly, and when the dog still wasnt interested, he put it down in front of his face, then took it straight away and threw it out. He did this first at breakfast, then at dinner. At dinner, the dog in question was more interested, but he still threw it out after putting it in front of him. The next morning, the dog was jumping up and down whilst the food was being prepared. He put it down, pulled it away, then looked at him for about a minute, then left it for him to eat. That dog now eats anything put down for him.

* If your dog suddenly goes off his food, it could be because he has dental problems, or a stomach problem. Get him checked out by the vet.

* Some dogs do actually prefer a certain type of food, just as people do. Try your dog with a variety of foods, and if he only eats one type, and will starve himself if he doesnt get it, the best solution can simply be to feed him that type of food.

* Dont feed your dog a high fat diet, or junk food, including chocolate. Its not good for them.

The Best Advice for Training Your New Puppy

Author: Jimmy Cox

Raising a puppy is a comparatively simple project, providing you make liberal use of patience and common sense. The young puppy cannot be expected to act like a grown dog; he needs direction and supervision. But the pup will quickly grow up and the period of close daily supervision becomes correspondingly shorter as the puppy matures. Naturally, raising a young puppy will cause some changes in your life and home. Whether these changes are pleasant or unpleasant depends largely on you and the regime you set for the puppy.

Setting The Stage For The New Puppy

If theres anything that will get the family and puppy off to a bad start, its bringing the pup home without any preparation. Resist the temptation to surprise the family with a new puppy. No doubt your family will quickly recover from the excitement stirred up by the sudden appearance of a captivating pup, but what about the puppy? It can be a trying time for him.

Sleeping arrangements

Decide whether the pup is going to sleep indoors or outdoors. Make this decision before you bring him home. The type and location of his bed are important. His bed or doghouse should be his own, a place where he can curl up and nap, away from the clatter of family life. And once he takes over bed or doghouse, respect his right to privacy.

Indoors

The puppys bed can be an ordinary cardboard box with a mattress of cedar shavings, shredded newspaper or a washable blanket. Or it can be one of the more elaborate commercial beds. If you use a cardboard box, cut down about one-half of one side, so the pup can climb in and out. Whatever the type of bed you buy or make, it should be so constructed that it is easily cleaned.

Once youve located the bed, avoid shifting it around after the pup has taken over. Moving the bed from spot to spot and room to room will only serve to confuse the puppy. He may well give it up altogether and find himself another nook.

Outdoors

If you provide the puppy with a dry and snug doghouse, he will manage very well outdoors all year round. Most dogs do, except the toy and miniature breeds. Nature will help the dog that lives outdoors by giving him a heavier coat.

Have the doghouse set up before the puppy arrives. If you dont have it ready, youll find yourself coping with two sleeping arrangements: one, his sleeping in the house until you can get a doghouse; and two, again when you put him outdoors. And once he gets accustomed to sleeping in the house, hell not want to go outdoors. Eliminate this double work by having the doghouse on hand.

Locate the doghouse where it will be protected from the hot summer sun and the winter winds. If a southern exposure is not practical, you can reduce wind-draft by erecting a canvas or burlap shield around the doghouse area. In summer, an awning will provide shade if no trees are nearby.

Equipment and accessories

A lot of running around and using makeshift equipment can be avoided if you have the necessary equipment and accessories before you bring the puppy home. Your pups "layette" should include a feeding dish, water pan, brush, comb, collar, leash, and some indestructible toys.

Stainless-steel or aluminum food and water pans are best. Enamelware splits and cracks. The food dish should not be too large, otherwise the pup will step into it. Later on, you can get him a larger pan. If you are getting a long-eared dog, you would be wise to buy one of the special food dishes for these breeds.

Now you are ready to bring your pup home!

Stop breeding for the sake of breeding breed to improve something on that dog you want to breed

There is a craze going on about dog breeding and it makes me sick to the bone. People have a wrong perception that there is a lot of money to be made in dog breeding. As a result they mate anything with a tail. This so wrong as it is very expensive to raise puppies that you will eventually struggle to sell.
Not sure what one can do to ensure that people get to understand this concept. Breed only to improve the breed, invest on a good female and pay a stud fee for a champion dog to breed from. Dont just breed from any dog with a tail.
On the picture I am standing next to Pavarotti a Champion dog that died some few years back and no one has bred anything close to that dog, but there are many dog breeders who breed on daily basis.
Thats my take.

Selecting a puppy

The easiest way to select the right pup is to ask the breeder to choose one that is not shy, overly dominant or stubborn. However, if the breeder prefers you do the picking, try to take an experienced person with you to view the pups.
If all fails, th following tips should help.

  • Watching a group of pups at play will help you choose th one you want. So, if you do not get the opportunity to view several pups, try to arrange to the whole litter together. Then you will be able to see temperament differences in action. If, for example, you wish to avoid owning a pack-leader type, you can look out for the classroom-bully-type pup that dominates and picks on the other pups. Once you have distinguished this type of pup, you will know that it will not be going home you!
  • Likewise, avoid the pup that runs and hides when the bully appears. A pup that barks at you or the other pups should also be avoided at all costs. You do not want a pup that is overly vocal: if one of the litter is barking at this early stage, it is going to be a nuisance barker. Good watchdogs do not usually start barking until they are between seven and 12 months.

Now you have decided on the breed type, CONGRATULATIONS.

The ideal age to acquire your new puppy once you have made the decision about your breed type is between 6 to 8 weeks of age. At this age the puppy will be newly weaned from its mother and dependent on its new owner. This is the ideal time to establish a strong bond between owner and pup.

Also insist tht the pup be purchased conditional upon your veterinarian examining it and giving it a clean bill of health.

Health Alert for Dog Owners

It was just a case of allergies for 7-month old Riley. But while visiting the vet Wednesday, her owner learned about an unsettling disease. "It is concerning because you take them for walks in different places, we take them to Rock Cut hiking with us and theres alot of wild animals," said Pet Owner Andrea Rowan. Her vet, Mike Harter, told her about Leptospirosis. Its a harmful bacteria carried in wildlife feces. Dogs can pick it up by simply splashing around in a puddle. "Now is the worst time, after all the rain we had this year," Harter said. The consequences for our four-legged friends can be serious, with kidney and liver failure. And it doesnt matter the size of dog. "Weve seen several little dogs, you wouldnt expect it, they walked in the middle of a puddle that a possum peed in," Harter said. The trouble with detecting this disease is that dogs dont show specific symptoms. Theyre just sick with a fever, sluggish and dont eat. Harter says your best bet is just bring the dog to the vet once theyre under the weather. And it should help. "Its treatable with antibiotics. If we catch it at the right time we can treat it and eliminate it," Harter said. Theres also a vaccine available that Harter is just starting to use at his clinic. Even so, pet owners, like Rowan, say shell be keeping a closer watch on her pooch when Rilys allergies are gone and shes back outside.

So far this year, Harters clinic has seen at least a dozen dogs with this disease. He says it takes about five-to-seven days for Leptospirosis to kick in. Harter says this disease can be fatal. But with the right response and treatment, you can avoid a deadly outcome. He also says other pets like cats are resistant to this disease, so the concern is more for dogs.

Pet Food Recall And How To Select A Nutritious Food Replacement

By Jerry Johnson

On April 5, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provided an update on the recall on pet foods from Menu Foods. The Agency reported its latest findings in the ongoing investigation into the recent outbreak of cat and dog illness and death associated with pet food manufactured with contaminated wheat gluten.

FDA launched an investigation within 24 hours after being notified by Menu Foods of a recall and investigators arrived at the companys plant and searched for possible sources of contamination. The same day, FDA consumer complaint coordinators nationwide began taking calls from consumers and veterinarians who reported illnesses potentially associated with the contaminated pet food. FDA has received over 12,000 reports in the last three weeks more than twice the number of complaints typically received in a year by the consumer complaint coordinators. In an effort to trace all of the contaminated product, the Agency conducted numerous inspections of manufacturers and warehouses identified as recipients of the suspect product. FDA has also been working with the affected firms to assist them with their product recall efforts.

FDAs investigation identified the distributor of the contaminated wheat gluten as ChemNutra, of Las Vegas, Nevada. FDA worked with the firm to trace the suspect product, and identified its Chinese source. FDA has asked the Chinese government to help us with the investigation which continues to determine how the melamine may have gotten into the wheat gluten. FDA is currently sampling 100 percent of all Chinese wheat gluten being offered for import. FDA Field laboratories confirmed the presence of melamine in shipments of wheat gluten received from a source from China.

This was done through testing of samples of finished product and raw materials. Melamine is a product used as a fertilizer with other industrial and commercial uses. FDA laboratories have conducted over 400 sample analyses, and to date have found 21 samples that were positive for melamine. To date, voluntary recalls of pet food products have been conducted by Del Monte Pet Products, Hills Pet Nutrition, Menu Foods, Nestle Purina PetCare Company, P&G Pet Care, and Sunshine Mills. On April 5, Sunshine Mills, Inc., of Red Bay, Alabama, voluntarily recalled a portion of its branded dog biscuits made at its Red Bay, Alabama biscuit plant during part of March 2007. In addition, Menu Foods, Inc., voluntarily expanded its pet food recall for selected cuts and gravy pet food products, manufactured back to November 8, 2006. Both firms issued press releases which are accessible on the FDA website.

Be sure you are aware of these other facts of the recall. This is an ongoing investigation. FDA is conducting recall audit follow-ups to ensure an effective recall. They continues to work with federal, state, and local partners, veterinarians, and members of the public as part of this investigation. At this time there is no evidence that any wheat gluten contaminated with melamine has entered the human food supply.

Understanding the role of melamine in each of the dog and cat illnesses will require an extensive analysis of the information, assistance from outside sources, and perhaps further research. The Food Drug Administrations priority now is to assure that all contaminated product is identified and removed from store shelves. All the contaminated wheat gluten has been traced, and all the pet food manufacturers who have received contaminated ingredients have been identified and have initiated recalls. Following the removal of all suspect products from retailers, there remains an ample supply of safe cat and dog food available at stores throughout the U.S.

The Food Drug Administration has a dedicated pet food recall page on its website which has all of the current information including all press releases issued, frequently asked questions, as well as contact information for FDA consumer complaint coordinators. FDA urges members of the media and public to visit the FDA website.

With the food recall, What should a pet owner look for in their pet food. Most pet owners have heard that it is better to feed their animals specially formulated food for pets rather than table scraps. An occasional treat is fine, but table scraps used to excess may unbalance a pets diet. Purchasing pet foods labeled as "complete and balanced" can help ensure that your pets diet is nutritionally adequate.

Dog and cat foods labeled as "complete and balanced" must meet standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) either by meeting a nutrient profile or by passing a feeding trial. The AAFCOs Canine Nutrition Expert (CNE) Subcommittee and Feline Nutrition Expert (FNE) Subcommittee have established new nutrient profiles for "complete and balanced" dog and cat foods. Dog Food Nutrient Profiles were established in 1991 and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles were established in 1992. Both were updated in 1995 to incorporate new scientific information.

The new nutrient profiles replaced the recommendations of the National Research Council (NRC) as the AAFCO-recognized authority on canine and feline nutrition. Dog and cat foods labeled as "complete and balanced" based on the AAFCO Dog or Cat Food Nutrient Profile must meet all the nutrient minimum and maximum levels as established by the Subcommittee. The Subcommittee set these levels after considering the most current information on good nutrition for dogs and cats. The profiles are designed to provide practical information for manufacturers of dog and cat foods.

There are now two separate nutrient profiles -- one for growth and reproduction and one for adult maintenance, instead of just one for all life stages. This allows dog and cat foods made for adult animals only to contain lower amounts of some nutrients, eliminating unnecessary excesses. Also, maximum levels of intake of some nutrients have been established for the first time, because of concern that over nutrition, rather than under nutrition, is a bigger problem with many pet foods today.

The protocols for conducting the feeding trials for dog and cat foods have also been updated. With these improvements, label reference to either the AAFCO nutrient profile or AAFCO feeding trials better assures the consumer of the validity of a "complete and balanced" claim. Endorsements, seals of approval, etc., from other organizations do not add assurances of safety and may be misleading.

Tips When Choosing Your Veterinary Pet Insurance

By MIKE SELVON

It should come as no surprise to learn that veterinary pet treatments and procedures are becoming more expensive. This increase in veterinarian costs has led many mammal owners to inquire about the availability and cost of veterinary pet insurance. Even though it is not as well-known or talked about as much as health care coverage for humans, pet health insurance has been available to cover family pets for the better part of two decades.

Insurance for pets has been available in some form or another for about twenty years now. However, many people even today are surprised to learn that animal health cover can be obtained to protect the animal welfare of beloved four-legged family members. As the cost of veterinary pet office visits and various procedures have increased, along with the cost of human health care in this country, more and more people are looking at this option as a financially viable and wise way to assure the best mammal care is provided when needed.

Veterinary pet insurance is very similar to the type of health care coverage that you would seek out for your family. With pet health insurance, the cost of veterinary care is covered when you purchase such a policy. The cost of the premiums will vary depending on how extensive the coverage is, but most families find the premiums to be quite affordable and easy to fit into the monthly household budget.

For many people, they want to purchase the best mammal cover that they can so that they feel confident in the level of care that their animal will receive. Animal cover policies that cover preventative measures or wellness care, in addition to the veterinary pet services that are needed in case of illness or emergency, are considered to be the premier type. Most of these policies will also cover on-going care and long-term treatments in the instance of chronic problems or conditions of disease.

However, you will find that these types of mammal cover plans, which are quite comprehensive in their coverage, come at a cost. You will pay the most in its insurance premiums for coverage that pays for routine health screening visits to your vet and for the regular vaccinations, immunizations and booster shots. Devoted animal lovers find a great deal of comfort in knowing that their family pets are covered under this type of animal health cover and are willing to pay extra for this coverage.

There are a few ways to reduce the cost of your animal cover premiums and still have very good coverage. One way to do this is to choose a higher deductible for your policy. Another is to choose to purchase a policy that has a co-payment option.

You also might be able to get a discount if you pay your premiums quarterly or annually, as opposed to monthly. Most pet insurance companies offer a variety of plans so that you can find the coverage you are comfortable with and still stay within your budget.

Before making a commitment on a specific veterinary pet insurance plan, be sure to learn about optional benefits and coverage that an individual pet plan will provide. In addition, it is a good idea to find out about the track record and the reputation of the various mammal cover companies before sending them your hard earned money. One last thing you can do in your search is to check with your veterinarian to see if they have ever encountered any payment problems or claim issues with the particular company you are considering.

Dog Training for Regular People

Hi to all the readers of "Dog Training Review and Tips". Who knew so many people would start blogs on dog training. One thing this tells me is that there are a lot of newer dog owners out there who just want to write about how their dog training is going and to hear from others around their experience of training their dogs.

So in this post as I write as a regular every day dog owner I just wanted to highlight a training tip I picked up on from my 11 year old daughter recently. She often takes some dog treats with her when she goes for walks with our dog Cola. The reason she does this she told me is so that she can work with Cola on commands like "sit" and "stay" while out on the walk. She also loves to work with Cola on taking little jumps over what ever objects come along on the walk. What an Awesome idea, so simple yet brilliant. Way to go Kennedy!

Dog Leash and Collar Training

Dog leash laws have become the conventional in nearly every city. Your dog should be on the restraint when he isnt on the owners property. This law has numerous benefits but could be considered a nightmare in case your pet isnt accustomed to utilizing a leash. It may become a complete battle of wills everyday in case your dog doesnt learn how to walk on the leash properly. Proper dog leash training is important.

One of what you will get that will help you with proper leash training is a great dog collar. The aim of teaching your dog just to walk properly on the leash would be to come with an animal which walks happily beside you or behind you, not in-front and not pulling you forward. When you initially begin to train your dog no matter age, you might want to make use of a good collar which will build your training efforts easier.

Which collar you decide on will be based greatly on the kind of dog that you simply own. For those who have a large dog you will want something which stop him from pulling. There are a number of collars which will allow you to stop your dog from pulling without injuring your pet. You dont want to inadvertently hurt your dog if hes straining to visit forwards.

One of the greatest techniques to use when teaching your dog just to walk on the leash may be the stop and freeze method. Which means that each time you are feeling your dog pulling you instantly freeze. Nobody moves before dog stops. If your collar will help you control your dog then acquire one.

A gentle leader type collar is fantastic for some dogs. These collars look much like a muzzle however they dont stop your dog from barking, eating or drinking. Some dogs may even obtain a tennis ball within their mouths with this kind of collar. What this collar does would be to turn the dogs go to the side once the leash is tight. Most dogs stop walking once they cannot see directly ahead. Instead of putting pressure on the neck from the animal, youre turning his go to the side.

Another good collar is a that pulls the dogs head down. It has exactly the same effect as the one which turns the dogs go to the side. They are super easy to locate and theyll not put any direct pressure on the dogs throat.

Pinch collars may look scary and cruel but theyre better than a collar that may injure a dogs trachea. Using the pinch collar the same pressure is applied round the dogs neck instead of being centered just on the wind pipe area.

If youve got a dog which has a very thick neck you might want to obtain a harness type collar for walking. Some breeds can easy pull their heads via a collar as their neck is really muscular. In some instances their neck is really wider than their scalp that allows these phones pull their scalp out from the collar and also the thing you dont want would be to have your pet slip his collar when you are out.

Whichever collar you select always remember that the goal will be in a position to walk your pet only using a leash and the every single day collar. The leash is just there like a safety precaution also, since what the law states demands it. Training collars are simply that, employed for training, you dont want these phones be considered a permanent a part of your and also the dogs life. The outcome you would like is dog to get along with you while he really wants to be and never since you are forcing him.

Have you Checked your Dogs Teeth Recently

By Matthew Homfray

Dogs cannot brush their own teeth. This may seem like stating the obvious, but there are a huge number of dogs out there with severe dental disease that desperately need treatment. Most owners are unaware of their dogs teeth problem until either a vet checks the dogs mouth, or the mouth becomes so sore and breath so foul that the owners attention is drawn to it.

As your dentist will advise you, preventative dental care is a much better strategy than waiting for a problem to occur and then dealing with it. Dogs do not tend to suffer from cavities as humans do, but often get periodontal (gum) disease, which is painful.

Are some dogs more likely to get dental disease than others?

Yes. There is a lot of breed variation in the susceptibility to periodontal disease. Toy breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers have very soft gums and, if their teeth are not brushed regularly, they often require dental scaling and polishing at just a few years of age. Larger breeds such as Golden Retrievers and Labradors have harder gums and rarely need any dental treatment, even without brushing. However, any pet can develop dental disease and any good vet will check a dogs mouth as part of a routine annual check up to advise whether any dental treatment is necessary.

Clearly diet plays a major role in the development of dental disease. Dogs that eat a dry biscuit based or complete diet are less likely to get periodontal disease compared with dogs on wet tinned food merely due to the crunchy hard food helping to stop tartar attaching to the teeth. Some owners supplement their dogs diet with chews specifically designed to help clean teeth, just like it is said that eating a crunchy apple helps to keep a humans teeth clean. However, just like in humans, diet alone is not enough for some dogs and brushing may be necessary if you are to avoid the prospect of dental scaling and polishing under general anesthetic further down the line.

How do I know if my dog has dental disease?

The common signs to look out for are:

1. Discoloration of the teeth, with yellow/brown tartar (known as calculus) adhering to the teeth, mainly on the cheek side.

2. Reddening of the gums (known as gingivitis).

3. Recession on the gum to expose some of the tooth root.

4. Bad breath (halitosis).

5. Dribbling more than is usual.

6. Reluctance to bite on hard objects such as sticks and toys.

7. Difficulty eating dry biscuit type foods.

How do I go about brushing my dogs teeth?

Firstly, buy a suitable toothbrush. Human toothbrushes are usually too hard for dogs, though can be used if they have soft bristles. Ideally you want a toothbrush with a long handle and an angled head to better fit the mouth, and extra soft bristles. An alternative is using a finger brush, which fits over the tip of your finger.

Next, find a suitable toothpaste. Dogs do not really like the mint taste of human toothpastes, so the whole operation will run more smoothly if you use a toothpaste designed for pets. Some pet toothpastes come in meaty flavors so that your pet enjoys the experience. These pet toothpastes usually contain enzymes that help control plaque. Fluoride may be incorporated to help control bacteria. Tip: try placing the toothpaste between the bristles if you can rather than on the top of them, as this will achieve better cleaning.

Now you have the equipment, try brushing the teeth. Most pets will accept this if you are gentle. It is much easier if you start when they are puppies so that they are accustomed to the procedure, but even older dogs can grow to accept it. The outside of the teeth (the cheek side) is the most important to clean, as the dogs tongue helps clean the inside of the teeth to an extent.

The toothbrush bristles should be placed where the teeth and gums meet at a 45 degree angle. The movement should be in an oval pattern. Try to gently force the bristle ends into the area around the base of the tooth as well as into the gap between the teeth. Aim for ten short back-and-forth motions, covering several teeth at a time, then move the brush to a new location.

When starting for the first time, do it twice daily without toothpaste for 1-2 weeks. This way your dog will become familiar with the feel of the brush quickly, and you can then start doing it with toothpaste. In the long term, twice weekly brushing is usually adequate.

My dog already has a rotten mouth, need I be worried about getting his/her teeth done at the vets?

As long as your dog does not have a pre-existing heart or respiratory problem, you need not be worried. Even if they do, chances are your dog will be fine. Dental scaling and polishing is done on a daily basis at many veterinary clinics, and does not have any risks in itself beyond the anesthetic risk that exists with every general anesthetic. Many clinics will do pre-anesthetic blood tests for geriatric patients as a matter of protocol, to check on their liver and kidney function. If your dog has severe periodontal disease, he/she may require teeth to be extracted. This is not something you should worry about in itself, as it is much better for your dog to have no tooth than a painful tooth.

If you think your dog might require professional dental treatment, you should book an appointment with your vet ASAP. Many dogs develop a new lease of life when their mouth suddenly becomes pain free, it may be the greatest gift you could ever give your pet.
