Make training time fun!

Dog training often ends up looking more akin to human training. This can be said because before an owner can effectively train a dog, they must first train themselves on how. You need to learn how to properly train your animal first, and then start training your dog. The tips in this article can help you get started.

Your dog should enjoy being trained by you. Keep in mind that your dog does not have an attention span that goes beyond fifteen minutes. Keep your rewards coming and vary what you give them.  For optimal dog training results, you must make sure that your dog is active at all times. Dogs are not meant to just lay around.  There are a lot of tricks you can teach your dog to do; a common one is training him to hold a toy in his mouth without chewing it. Whenever he puts the toy in his mouth, give a treat and his clicker reward. After your dog succeeds in mouthing an object a few times, move on to rewarding the dog for picking it up with his mouth. Once he does, click and reward. As he gets even better, only give him a reward for holding the plushie in his mouth for a few seconds.

 Do not neglect to make a visit to the vet for a spay or neuter around the six month mark. This should be done at the same time you start obedience training. A spayed or neutered dog is a better pet and a more attentive obedience student. You and your pet will enjoy a longer and happier life together.

 Use the appropriate tone of voice when you are correcting your pet. Dogs tend to be well in tune with how their trainers are feeling. An appropriately stern tone can reinforce discipline.

 If you are training more than one dog, remember that some breeds of dogs can be trained together, but some breeds cannot. If your dogs cannot focus during training, you may need to start with one-on-one before training them together.

 Training your dog can help if your dog has a hard time being left alone. It is quite possible that if your dog frequently barks unceasingly or damages your belongings when you leave, he or she is actually suffering from separation anxiety. If you train your dog to stay busy when you are gone, it can help. While youre training your dog, its important to also show a great amount of love so your dog knows that everything is alright.

 Communication is the basis for dog training. As you train and interact with your dog, you must be consistent and straightforward. This applies to corrections and rewards, as well as your body language, when training. Remember to always pay attention to the communication signals from your dog. After your dog succeeds in mouthing an object a few times, move on to rewarding the dog for picking it up with his mouth. When he does, just click and then give a reward. After that, only give the reward if he does hold the toy in his mouth.

 When training a dog it should always be done in a positive, motivated environment. Remember to reward desired behavior achieved by your dog while training, especially in response to specific requests. Using training techniques that are negative and based upon punishments will likely make your dog afraid, disobedient, and unhappy.

 A clicker works well when training most dogs. Using a clicker is as simple as showing your dog that good things happen when the clicking noise is heard. Try using this technique right away, doing it frequently over a span of a few days. Your dog will soon know that the clicking noise means that they are doing a good job.

The dog should be given ample rewards in various forms. Your dog should enjoy lots of praise for a job well-done. You and your dog should both enjoy training.

Whenever you are teaching a dog a multi-step task, reduce it to a series of smaller tasks. A good example is training the dog to pick up the morning paper for you. To begin this process, you have to teach him how he can hold onto an object. Next, he must learn the name of the object. After this, teach him to pick the object up. Finally, your dog should learn to bring an object to you on command. If the behavior is broken down into steps, the dog will more easily understand what is expected of him.

Make sure training has an element of fun incorporated into it. Playful interaction strengthens the bond between you, and will have your dog striving even harder to please you during training. Treats are great incentives when training a dog; however, treats can cause a dog to become overweight, so limit the number offered. The number of treats a dog gets during training can rack up pretty quickly, and a lot of owners overlook this part of their canines diet.

You should never tether two dogs in close proximity to one another. It is just too easy for dogs in such a situation to tangle their leads together, and this can lead to serious injuries for both of them. If dogs get tangled up too severely, one can get wrapped up so badly it could close off the airway, and he could die.

Every puppy in training will make some mistakes in the potty department. To help your training stay on track, clean up any messes right away. The smell from the feces and urine can stay in the carpet, and cause your pet to want to relieve themselves on that spot more often. There are a number of products that will get rid if the smell. Look for them at your favorite pet store.

Positively encourage your dog without using treats. Remember, that dog treats are one way to reward a dog for desired behavior. Unfortunately, you probably dont have a treat in your pocket every single day, especially when you arent in training mode. Hugging or patting your dog is a good way to replace treats.

If you want success in training your dog, you must make sure that your dog has a good activity level throughout his life. By their very nature, most dogs are not sedentary. They need to be active, so they can be happy and healthy. Some examples of ways to get your dog more active would be to put it in a fitness class, take it running, or teach it how to play Frisbee. If you stay active with him, he is not likely to get bored.

Introducing Volcano

2011, the year that was.

Its a new year and I am looking forward to a beautiful year with new targets to be achieved. Too many things happened in the past year and I just want to forget and look forward to 2012.

Fellow bloggers I am back doing what I like the most and that is educating people and sharing information on the welfare of our dogs.

I have a new puppy that I am busy training at the moment, her name is Volcano, I have no idea as to why the name but it was given by my son, Lwazi as he is the one who names all my dogs. She is an intelligent puppy full of life and has all the energy and is always willing to learn. She is three months old.

I have started her on the basic training and is mastering fetch than all other commands. But it wont be long before she is up to speed with other basic commands.

I intend enrolling her at the South African Dog Training College as soon as all her innoculations are done. No trial by error here, I want her to be trained where I learned all that I know today as far as Dog training is concerned.

You may think that dog training aids are out there for you to spend money and not actually reap any benefits from. That is not the case. Dog training aids are there to help you succeed in teaching your dog, this could be teaching him obedience, agility or any other type of teaching you want to do. People may think this is cruel but it is completely harmless. It just lets your dog know that barking is not acceptable. These collars are available at pet shops and on the internet and are not too expensive.

For dog obedience some dog training aids that are available are dog clickers, the newest craze out on the market which allows owners instead of associating sit with a word they use a click instead and reward with treats, no punishment allowed. Another aid available is a harness; this gets fitted around your dog’s upper body so when you are teaching him to heel a slight tug on the harness pulls him back completely. The harness is a widely used obedience aid and is greatly used for bigger dogs such as German shepherds and Rottweilers.

There are also dog training aids available for around the home. These are simple and effective. Many people turn to dog training aids when nothing else has worked but they don’t have to be the last thing you try, with aids so cheap these days there is no reason why you cant invest in something that will make your dogs learning process a lot more exciting!

Preparing Homemade Dog Food

Preparation for home cooked meals for your dog is simple and need not be a pain at all. I have switched from commercialized pet food to home cooked meals after my family two lovely dogs died of cancer suddenly. They were on premium dried pet food all their life but still, both of them died at a young age at 6 and 7 of cancer. This was way before the pet food recall event.

I knew at that time that their commercial pet food must have contributed somewhat to their condition as both were rather young when passed on. Putting aside my initial struggle with thoughts about how difficult to cook home cooked meals for my dogs and just got started with it.

I do not even cook for myself! How can I cook nutritious meals for my pets! I started reading loads of books on home cooked food and came out with this simple and easy to prepare recipe for dog food. It can be done even for busy people like you and me. If I can do it, so can you! So let us step up and commit to making the lives of our pet a long, happy and healthy one.

Take note that we cannot change our dog diet overnight as it may cause stomach upset. Start gradually and mixing their feed gradually until she is completed switched to home cooked food.

Preparation

Purchase the following ingredients, all the ingredients below in equal proportions, supplements should be added separately. The amount to cook depends on your pet size.

Use your own judgment when it comes to quantity to feed. The suggestion below is meant for a week supply for a 1 medium sized dog, healthy dog with normal weight range.

Please change the quantity for your pet needs (This suggestion provides 1 week food for a 10kg dog):

1) Grains choice: Brown rice, provide for 2-3 cups cooked rice (less if your dog is obese or require some weight loss)

2) Vegetables (Add 3 varieties): Broccoli, cauliflower, any green leafy vegetables and beans. Make about 4 cups of pulp vegetables for easy absorption.

3) Meats 500gms: Choice of Chicken, Lamb, Beef or Kangaroo (rotate weekly).

4) 2 Eggs

Avoid night shade vegetables, onions and cabbage for your pets. Some dogs experience more gas when fed with cabbage.

Quick Easy Cooking Steps

Step 1: Put some olive oil in your pot and cook meats

Step 2: Cook rice (or any grain choice, I personally prefer brown rice)

Step 3: Pulp or chop finely the vegetables

Step 4: When meats are almost cook, add the pulp vegetables into the pot

Step 5: Do not overcook the vegetables. Keep them half raw for the enzymes.

Step 6: Add eggs and cook the vegetables in the pot to make the vegetables palatable.

Storage
For convenience, cook your pet homemade meals up to one week supply. Freeze them in daily portions separately for convenience.

Just remember to place next day food supply from the freezer to chiller compartment of your refrigerator. Place a note at your fridge to remind you to do so everyday if not, your poor pet has not food to eat.

Feeding Preparation

Step 1: Place chilled food in your pet bowl

Step 2: Boil some hot water

Step 3: Warm up the food to room temperature with some hot water.

Step 4: Add necessary supplements such as Vitamin C, Flaxseed oil, Egg shell meals for calcium.

Step 5: Mix and serve!

Using boiled water to warm up food is a recommended. If you prefer microwaving to warm up food, note that this method may destroy some nutrients.

Emergency meals In case you have forgotten to defreeze your pet food. Here is a simple guide to a quick no hassle wholesome meal in just 5 minutes!

Ensure you home has these at all times in case you need to whip out a wholesome meal in 5 minutes!

All you need are:

Step 1) Oats (get those quick to cook kind or just add hot boiling water)

Step 2) Eggs (Break an egg for a small/medium sized dog)

Step 3) Supplements (Add your regular supplement)

That is all you need for the emergency meal! To ensure not to upset the digestive system from sudden change in diet, feed this option once a while so she is well adjusted to this diet when the need arises.

Hunting expedition

I went hunting over the weekend in Mpumalanga, Middleburg. I had a ball. The guys take the sport very serious and that changes my perception of hunters. I used to think of hostel dwellers when I thought of hunting and dogs. I was with Doctors, Teachers, accountants, police, prison warders, business owners and a whole lot of professional people. The sport is bigger than I thought it was.
The guys are very professional, they do not hunt for meat, but to have a good time at the end of the day.

I saw quality, top of the range. I cant mention how many we killed just in case you forward this to the SPCA. But we had a good time, away from the noisy gossips. There were about 37 guys with more than 75 dogs. Next time, I will take pictures to share with you fellow bloggers.

Some of us were detained for trespassing, this comes with the package of course!

When you look at the quality of the dogs you see that these guys take the sport very serious. This is not to say we do not have guys who hunt for meat purposes, but the ones i was with are professional and well organised. Their dogs are clean and well looked after. Some of them have been imported from as far as Ireland and Australia and they spent a fortune in the process. Buying and importing a dog can be as much as R50 000. So you can imagine what class of people am I talking about. These guys go for the best bloodlines, they dont just go and buy from Baas Jon. They do their research and follow the bloodlines of a dog they intend getting and the money is not an issue.

Soon I will be joining the South African Greyhound Association. We need to take the sport to the next level, you cant beat them if you dont join them and in the process learn as much as possible and then run away and open your own. There are mnyama brothers who are already doing it and we have to join hands and take it to another level.

"Black Empowerment, I Love You". We now have farms where we hunt and have a good time, in the past we used to buy from Baas Jon, but he wouldnt let us hunt in his land. Even though the farms are used for braais and parties, at least they are there and we will one day plant something and keep at least one cow and one goat, for the party of course.

 If you lack patience or cannon remain even-tempered during the training session, do not push forward. If you cannot focus on remaining patient when training your dog, it will quickly lose interest in what you are trying to teach.

 Take note of the tone of your voice as you discipline your pet. Dogs are very empathic to their trainers emotions. An appropriate firm tone can really reinforce a disciplinary message.

Companion Show May 5th

Our annual show in aid of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People will be held this Sunday at the usual venue of Roseisle Hall, nr Burghead.

Entries will be taken from 11am with judging starting at 12 noon. There will be the usual pedigree, novelty and obedience classes taking place in 3 rings. Entry costs £2.50 for the first class and 50p all subsequent.

Pedigree judge - Sue Fraser (Redhunt). Novelty judge - Lisa Lee-Hempshall. Obedience judge - Sandra Dawson.

The kitchen will be open for pies, filled rolls, baking etc.

Grapes Nuts and Your Dogs Health Foods that Fido should Avoid

"Magoo was a big, playful Labrador retriever who often got himself into sticky situations..."

So begins a story in the latest report from the ASPCA on foods that may be toxic to dogs. It turns out that Magoo got into the pantry and snagged himself about a pound of raisins. He ate the whole thing, of course.

The ASPCA never mentions Magoos fate. But they do tell us that as little as a handful of raisins can impair a dogs health and has been fatal for some. Ditto for the grape.

Who Knew?

Growing up, I regarded our family dogs as "the first cycle of the dishwasher". They were good about waiting their turn for whatever we left on our plates, and we werent too concerned about offering them "people food". It never crossed our minds that our dogs health could be affected by a few measly table scraps. What was safe for us, we figured, was safe for our pets.

Whats more, whenever I ate grapes, I liked to give one or two to our German Shepherd "Tiffany". The grapes always popped out of her mouth when she tried to bite into them and Tiffany, ever the good sport, refused to give up until shed squashed each one into submission. It guaranteed at least 60 seconds of harmless fun.

Tiffany was also fond of chewing gum (she chewed it -- wrapper and all -- but didnt swallow it!) We had the sugarless kind, which is often sweetened these days with xylitol.

Little did I know that I might have been poisoning our family pet! (More on xylitol below).

Why are grapes harmful?

As far as grapes and raisins go, no one is sure why theyre harmful. Its been confirmed that even grapes grown without fertilizers or pesticides can be toxic to dogs. But not to every dog, and not every time. Its also not known whether small amounts eaten over a long time period could have a cumulative effect.

What we do know is that the end result in nearly all reported cases of grape or raisin toxicity is acute kidney failure. (The term "acute" means that the condition is severe and comes on quickly.) The dog ultimately cant produce urine, which means they cant filter toxins out of their systems -- a process essential to life.

During the twelve-month period in which the effects of grapes were studied, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center handled 140 cases involving one or more dogs. Over a third of the dogs developed symptoms ranging from vomiting to kidney failure, and seven dogs died. The ASPCA based their study on reported cases, so naturally there may be cases where a dogs health is entirely unaffected by eating grapes. But until they know all the facts, the Society advises against feeding pets grapes or raisins in any amount.

An ounce of prevention

So, your dog just scored himself a big box of raisins. Whats a pet owner to do?

The first line of defense, if the grapes or raisins were eaten recently, is to induce vomiting and administer activated charcoal (it absorbs toxins in the GI tract). Vomiting is also the first sign that your dog is in trouble, so skip right to the activated charcoal if vomiting has already occurred. (In a pinch you can make your own activated charcoal by charring a piece of toast until its blackened and crumbles easily.) Then call your vet right away.

The vet will keep your dog on intravenous fluids for at least 48 hours and monitor blood chemistry daily. Normal blood work after 3 days usually means your dog is in the clear.

Keeping a watchful eye out, of course, is the best way to keep your pet out of trouble. Like children, dogs (and other pets) have a knack for getting into mischief when were not looking.

Its Not Just the Grapes...

There are other foods your dog should be kept away from, and some of them may surprise you.

Here are some other foods that can put a dogs health in harms way:

Chocolate

Who can resist chocolate? Like it your not, your dog.Chocolate is made with cocoa beans and cocoa beans contain a chemical called Theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Note that cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for a dogs health, actually quite nutritious and digestible.

Artificial Sweeteners

Xylitol is used as a sweetener in many products, especially sugarless gum and candies. Ingesting large amounts of products sweetened with xylitol may cause a sudden drop in blood sugar in dogs, resulting depression, loss of coordination, and seizures. According to Dr. Eric K. Dunayer, a consulting veterinarian in clinical toxicology for the poison control center, "These signs can develop quite rapidly, at times less than 30 minutes after ingestion of the product" states Dr. Dunayer, "...therefore, it is important that pet owners seek veterinary treatment immediately."

Turkey

Turkey skin is currently thought to cause acute pancreatis in dogs, partly due to its high fat content.

Other foods listed by the ASPCA as harmful:

Alcoholic beverages

Avocado (the only "fatty" member of the vegetable family)

Coffee (all forms of coffee)

Moldy or spoiled foodsSalt

Dog Food Tips For Preventing Fussy Eaters

There is much to recommend feeding your dog homemade dog food if you have the time to prepare it, and make sure you have recipes that give the correct ratio of nutrients, as well as the vitamins and supplements youll need to add. These can be mixed up in a bag, stored, and sprinkled in every meal.

Dogs should have a minimum of 18% protein for maintenance when they are adults, and 22% for reproduction and growth. Fat should be a minimum of 5% for adult dogs, and 8% for reproduction and growth. But the more fat that is in the diet, the more protein there should be. Fat makes dogs, as well as people, eat less by making them feel fuller. If they eat less, and there are less of other essential nutrients like protein and vitamins and minerals, the dog will not get the nourishment it needs.

Generally, commercial pet food is made according to the appropriate guidelines, but care should be taken if significant amounts of other food is added to the diet, and it is high in fat.

But whether youre feeding your dog commercial dog food, or home made dog food, there are a few things to keep in mind so you dont end up with a fussy dog:

* dogs should be fed once a day once they are no longer puppies, or two small meals, no more. Feeding your dog too frequently when he is older can turn him appear like a fussy eater, when he is actually full.

* feeding your dog too regularly can get him into the routine of expecting to eat at those times, too, and may lead to weight gain. Letting him get hungry, and feeding sensibly, will not harm him. In the wild, dogs would eat for once a day until they were completely full.

* Dont stand and stare at your dog waiting for him to eat. He will likely think something is wrong, or something else is coming, and wont eat.

* Dont give into your dog and give him something else straight away if he refuses his meal, as hes effectively training you and not the other way around!

* Theres nothing wrong with feeding your dog a varied diet, but dont keep changing the food because he seems fussy and wont eat it. Make sure nothing is wrong with him physically first, then if he is healthy, take charge of the situation. Put his food down, leave him to it, and then 30 minutes later go and check to see whether its been eaten. If it hasnt, take it away, then at the end of the day put down some fresh food. Repeat the process, and take it away 30 minutes later if it still isnt eaten. This way youll train your dog to eat his food, and not reinforce his behaviour.

Brian Kilcommons has a very interesting method for teaching dogs to eat their food. When the above fails, he prepared the dog food in front of the dog, making lots of yummy noises whilst he did it. He made it slowly, and when the dog still wasnt interested, he put it down in front of his face, then took it straight away and threw it out. He did this first at breakfast, then at dinner. At dinner, the dog in question was more interested, but he still threw it out after putting it in front of him. The next morning, the dog was jumping up and down whilst the food was being prepared. He put it down, pulled it away, then looked at him for about a minute, then left it for him to eat. That dog now eats anything put down for him.

* If your dog suddenly goes off his food, it could be because he has dental problems, or a stomach problem. Get him checked out by the vet.

* Some dogs do actually prefer a certain type of food, just as people do. Try your dog with a variety of foods, and if he only eats one type, and will starve himself if he doesnt get it, the best solution can simply be to feed him that type of food.

* Dont feed your dog a high fat diet, or junk food, including chocolate. Its not good for them.

Highland CA Open Show

Highland CA held their annual summer show at Dingwall Mart on Saturday 31st July. The rain threatened a few times but never really came to anything, which was a good thing seeing as the gundog, working and pastoral rings were all outdoors.

It was a good day for Spey Valley with lots of wins for members, including the top spot, which was won by Junes Benson. I think this must be his 10th Best In Show!

Linda and Rons Hugo was also up there at the top, he took Reserve Best Puppy In Show!

Plenty of others to report:

Terrier - Jock and daughter Anns Rosie (I think) took BOB and G1, puppy Zac was Best terrier pup. Cathys Sula was Best NSC and G2. Karens Ceilidh was BOB, took G4 and Best terrier veteran.

Gundog - Heathers Skye was Best NSC and also took the group. Sues Jana won her class then BOB and G3. Katies Chewie was BOB. Sues Kendal and Logan both won their classes and BOB.

Utility - Linda and Rons Denzil won his class, BOB and G2, Hugo Best Utility puppy and RBPIS. Morags Logie was Best Import.

Toy - Sues Elwood, Rosa and Pansy each won their respective classes, Pansy took BOB and G1. Elwood was Best toy puppy and Gypsy was Best toy veteran. Jills Tiger was BOB and G2. Rias Jasper won his class, BOB and G3. Lindas Esmee was Best NSC and G4.

Pastoral - Lindas Gino won his class, BOB and G4 (I think). Katrinas Marty won his Graduate class.

Working - Junes Benson BOB, G1 and BIS. Donnas River was also BOB.

Hound - Erica and Dougs Charlotte won her Post Grad class, Willow won her Open class but was beaten to BOB by Charlotte who went on to take G2.

Glenn won the 12-16 year Junior Handling class.

The Best Advice for Training Your New Puppy

Raising a puppy is a comparatively simple project, providing you make liberal use of patience and common sense. The young puppy cannot be expected to act like a grown dog; he needs direction and supervision. But the pup will quickly grow up and the period of close daily supervision becomes correspondingly shorter as the puppy matures. Naturally, raising a young puppy will cause some changes in your life and home. Whether these changes are pleasant or unpleasant depends largely on you and the regime you set for the puppy.

Setting The Stage For The New Puppy

If theres anything that will get the family and puppy off to a bad start, its bringing the pup home without any preparation. Resist the temptation to surprise the family with a new puppy. No doubt your family will quickly recover from the excitement stirred up by the sudden appearance of a captivating pup, but what about the puppy? It can be a trying time for him.

Sleeping arrangements

Decide whether the pup is going to sleep indoors or outdoors. Make this decision before you bring him home. The type and location of his bed are important. His bed or doghouse should be his own, a place where he can curl up and nap, away from the clatter of family life. And once he takes over bed or doghouse, respect his right to privacy.

Indoors

The puppys bed can be an ordinary cardboard box with a mattress of cedar shavings, shredded newspaper or a washable blanket. Or it can be one of the more elaborate commercial beds. If you use a cardboard box, cut down about one-half of one side, so the pup can climb in and out. Whatever the type of bed you buy or make, it should be so constructed that it is easily cleaned.

Once youve located the bed, avoid shifting it around after the pup has taken over. Moving the bed from spot to spot and room to room will only serve to confuse the puppy. He may well give it up altogether and find himself another nook.

Outdoors

If you provide the puppy with a dry and snug doghouse, he will manage very well outdoors all year round. Most dogs do, except the toy and miniature breeds. Nature will help the dog that lives outdoors by giving him a heavier coat.

Have the doghouse set up before the puppy arrives. If you dont have it ready, youll find yourself coping with two sleeping arrangements: one, his sleeping in the house until you can get a doghouse; and two, again when you put him outdoors. And once he gets accustomed to sleeping in the house, hell not want to go outdoors. Eliminate this double work by having the doghouse on hand.

Locate the doghouse where it will be protected from the hot summer sun and the winter winds. If a southern exposure is not practical, you can reduce wind-draft by erecting a canvas or burlap shield around the doghouse area. In summer, an awning will provide shade if no trees are nearby.

Equipment and accessories

A lot of running around and using makeshift equipment can be avoided if you have the necessary equipment and accessories before you bring the puppy home. Your pups "layette" should include a feeding dish, water pan, brush, comb, collar, leash, and some indestructible toys.

Stainless-steel or aluminum food and water pans are best. Enamelware splits and cracks. The food dish should not be too large, otherwise the pup will step into it. Later on, you can get him a larger pan. If you are getting a long-eared dog, you would be wise to buy one of the special food dishes for these breeds.

Now you are ready to bring your pup home!

Praise Motivation and Correction

   Three things are needed to be successful when working with your dog. Regardless of what you are trying to achieve, your training needs to include 1.  Motivation, 2.  Praise, and 3. Correction; and the dog needs to understand the command. Lets say we are teaching the dog to sit. Your dog already knows how to sit, but he doesnt know what its called and we need him to do it when we give him the command . We will start out with a calm soft voice saying "Sit" , We will say we are training the traditional way with a training collar and leash. When the dog does not sit, you give a gentle leash correction in an upward direction and may need to gently push down on the dogs rear end. As you give the leash correction you will tell the dog "No". The leash correction and the word "No" should be used simultaneously. Remember we are TEACHING the dog, and there is no reason to use a gruff voice. Use a gentle voice. When the dog is in the sit position you will then praise, also using a calm voice. Do not over praise, for some dogs can get too excited and come up out of the sit. As you praise, let the dog know that what he has done is a good thing, tell him "Good Sit" emphasizing the work sit, saying it soft and drawn out. When the dog comes up out of the sit without permission stay calm. You simply give another leash correction and as you do so tell him "No" then "Sit" as you put him back in the sit position. Here is how the Praise, Motivation, and Correction apply:  You may use a treat for a motivator, then your praise to let him know he followed the command properly. Then, if he breaks the command, you then need correction to give him guidance back to the proper behavior.

Stop breeding for the sake of breeding breed to improve something on that dog you want to breed

There is a craze going on about dog breeding and it makes me sick to the bone. People have a wrong perception that there is a lot of money to be made in dog breeding. As a result they mate anything with a tail. This so wrong as it is very expensive to raise puppies that you will eventually struggle to sell.
Not sure what one can do to ensure that people get to understand this concept. Breed only to improve the breed, invest on a good female and pay a stud fee for a champion dog to breed from. Dont just breed from any dog with a tail.
On the picture I am standing next to Pavarotti a Champion dog that died some few years back and no one has bred anything close to that dog, but there are many dog breeders who breed on daily basis.

Get your dog chew toys to get rid of teething pains. You should replace the object with a chew toy as soon as this occurs so your dog understands what is okay to chew on. If your puppy needs to chew because he is teething, try a frozen washcloth.

You do not want to over-stress your new pup by trying to teach him too much too quickly. A puppy only has short bursts of energy and doesnt have a long attention; youve got to keep your training sessions positive and short. Your puppy will happier with the experience, and less resistant to your future efforts. He will be looking forward to them instead.

Continue training your dog so he doesnt forget how to learn. Too many owners tend to be under the impression that once they have trained their dog, thats the end of it. Dogs are much like humans, in the sense that they share the same habitual learning system. It is important that the training your dog receives is reinforced regularly.

Stay consistent with the words you use to command your dog. This causes a strong association between a word and an action in your dogs mind. Remember to be consistent about what commands you use and what behaviors you expect in every training session. By doing this, you will have a higher rate of success with training your pet.

Due to the puppy class being so busy, there has been a change to some times.  Ringcraft is now 6.30-7.15pm and puppies 7.15-8pm.  There is no change to the other two classes.

Dundee Canine Club

Camperdown Country Park, Dundee is where Dundee CC hold their annual Open show. Its a lovely setting, with many lovely mature trees dotted about, as you can see from the above photo. Conditions were ideal on June 12th with frequent sunny spells - enough to make for a few red faces the next day! Ground conditions were not quite so ideal due to the number of rabbit droppings that were scattered over all the rings! Not so easy keeping dogs heads up with such tempting scents about - especially for those breeds closer to the ground!

Junes Benson was on top form again, he took Best Of Breed, then the group and finished it off with yet another Best In Show! Congratulations!

The show is big and there was a lot happening at once so Im not too sure about how everyone did. Please let me know if you did well.


Toy - Jills Tiger and Chico were both 1st in their respective classes and Tiger took BOB. Rias Jasper also won his class, BOB and then G4. Elizabeth and Georges Lola was BOB. Sues Elwood was 2nd in a large breed Puppy class but went one better by winning the AV Minor Puppy Stakes class plus £10 to boot! (It all helps towards those fuel costs!)

Pastoral - Morag handled Jennys Sadie to win her class, BOB and then to win a very large group! Katrinas Leo won his Limit class and then BOB.

Terrier - Daveenas Inka was Best AVNSC and Caitlins Solo was BOB and 2nd in Puppy.

Gundog - Katies Lara won her Post Grad class. Lynnes Phoebe was 4th in a large Junior Bitch class.

Junior Handling - Glenn was Best Junior Handler and this qualifies him for SKC finals, Crufts 2011 and Richmond.

Achieving Dog Training Success With The 18 Donts Rules

A well-train dog usually leads a happier and healthier life and its owner also can enjoy a trouble-free life long companion. Dog training - basic obedience, house and potty training are therefore essential and important to a dog’s education.

The conventional method of dog training tips and guide would be to list a series of things that you should “Do” and you might even know the A-Z of dog training! But sometimes what should be done can be said best by telling what should not be done. Hope you agree with me!

This article seeks to list 18 “Don’t” when you train your dog. The reasons for the donts will become evident as the lessons continue and each one is based upon the distinctive psychology of the dogs mind.

1. DONT punish your dog while you are angry or lack control of yourself.

2. DONT punish your dog with the lead or any instrument of training or anything he should associate with duty or pleasure.

3. DONT sneak up on your dog or grab him from the rear.

4. DONT chase your dog to catch him; he must come to you or run after you.

5. DONT coax your dog to you and then turn upon him with the whip. You will regret the deception.

6. DONT trick or fool or taunt your dog. It is cruel and inconsistent to tease your dog to come to you when he can not.

7. DONT punish a dog by stepping on his paws needlessly. They are exceedingly sensitive. Dont twist his ears playfully or otherwise. Never strike him on the backbone, in the face or on the ears.

8. DONT grab your dog or reach for him quickly. He should never fear his master, should not be made nervous by his master, and should feel that punishment given is deserved.

9. DONT nag your dog; dont be giving orders to him constantly; dont pester him with your shoutings.

10. DONT praise a dog for doing a certain act, then at a later time, scold him for doing the same act. If you permit him to bite your toes today and think it fun, do not strike him for doing it tomorrow, when you are not in good humor. Consistency is a chief virtue in dog training.

11. DONT train your dog immediately or soon after he has eaten.

12. DONT lose patience with a puppy younger than six months. Never throw or kick a puppy nor lift him by the head or leg or skin of the neck.

13. DONT train him in feats requiring much strength or endurance until he is at least six months old.

14. DONT work your dog without some short rest or play periods during training. A five-minute rest for every fifteen minutes of training is desirable.

15. DONT permit everyone to give commands to your dog. While you are training him, he must be a one-man dog, depending on you alone to feed him and care for him.

16. DONT consider tricks the chief end or the chief part of training. Usefulness is the object sought in all instruction of the dog. Acts that spring naturally from the dogs instincts are to be fostered.

17. DONT expect your dog to be a wonderful dog after a few weeks of training; four months to a year may be necessary in order to make the master proud of him, but the work is worth the effort. Training never ends.

18. DONT jump to the conclusion that your dog is dumb. He may differ with you believing that the trainer should know more than the dog.

Cheshire County Open Show

While June and Katrina were away having a good time camping at the champ shows down south they also took in Cheshire County Open Show. Unusually for an open show, it is held over two days and must be very popular because it had classes almost as big as many of the champ shows!

Newfies had six classes and an entry of 43! Benson won his class, took BOB and then G2.

Im sure the collie classes would have been well filled too, Marty won one of his classes and was 2nd in the other, Leo was 2nd in his.

Taking your puppy home

The change in environment will be stressful for the new family member. A few points to remember:

• Keep the pup on the same diet for the first ten days.



• Obtain the worming history from the breeder and establish when it should next be de-wormed.



• Make a point of obtaining a vaccination card and make a note when the next vaccinations are due.



• Keep the puppy in one room taking care to the door closed. Ignore the noise (1st training)



• Ensure a warm, comfortable bed with a hot water bottle and an alarm clock in the clothing. The dog will find the ticking clock comforting.



• Newspaper on the floor to soak up accidents.



• Supervise the introduction of other animals to the pup.



• Puppies need to relieve themselves frequently and very often after exercise, eating, or sleeping. Encourage the pup to relieve itself on paper. Never punish it for soiling on the floor and dont put its not in the mess - some owners mistakenly believe this to be the right thing to do.



• The first few nights will be nosey, as it will be missing mum and litter mates - ignore.



• Always bring the puppy home on fridays when you have an off day on Saturday and Sunday to spend with the pup in order for it to adjust.

Make sure the diet you are feeding your dog is healthy and nutritious. The effects a bad diet has on your dog extend further than you might think. It not only makes your dog unhealthy but can make him misbehave as well. With the right healthy diet, your dog will be more energetic and eager to please during training sessions.

Do not let your own mood influence how you treat your dog. If your dog has been good, do not treat him badly!

Try training a dog to clench a plush toy in his mouth. When you see him mouth a toy, give him a reward or treat and use a clicker. After he does this a few times, wait until your dog puts the toy into his mouth. After has has done this, you should click and promptly give a reward. Now, reserve the reward for only those times he completely holds the toy inside his mouth.

Condition your puppy early on so that he is used to being examined by the vet. Skim your hands over its body, and offer praise to your dog as long as its behavior is good. You also need to get him ready to have his paws held and looked at, as well as his teeth examined. Your friends may be able to help you out, too.

Your dog must respect you in order for training to work. Make sure he knows that you know what you are doing and are in control of the situation. Then he will look to you and defer to your judgment. Do not let your dog walk ahead of you when you go on walks.
